“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

My wife and wanted a quick getaway that wasn't to far from home and a location that we had not visited in a while.

I picked the Historic Inns from trip advisors write ups.

We arrived early, before 3, and our room was not ready. No problem we were early. We were able to valet park our car and were able to walk around for a few hours. We came back after 3 and the room I had reserved was still not ready(a king in the Maryland Inn). For our inconvenience we were put in a suite (217). A nice big living room with kitchenette a balcony a nice sized bedroom with queen bed and two bathrooms.

I wanted to try the restaurant and pub but they are closed on Sundays. Not sure why as every other pub and restaurant is open in town. Very disappointing.

We were able to have breakfast in the restaurant and really enjoyed the food and the restaurant itself. However the greeter/waitress/bus person was stretched trying to take care of all of those duties singlehanded. She should be commended she handled them with all with a smile.

The location of these Inns are fantastic. The cost is comparable to others in the area. Also these are OLD buildings. With that comes certain quirks that we enjoy and look for. However the bathrooms were, if not brand new, then well maintained. The grout and seams were cleaner than I have seen in many big name hotels.

We will stay here again.

Dear Tom F:

Thank you for your feedback on your recent stay. I was glad to see that we were able to upgrade you upon arrival since your room was not ready. Our restaurant and lounge are not open on Sundays due to typical business levels in the hotel on Sunday nights; there are, as you noted, many other options in Annapolis all within walking distance.

I was glad to read that our server was pleasant, you found your bathroom grout to be clean, and that our location was great. We work to match our schedule of employees with anticipated business levels and will continue to focus on that.

We appreciate your business and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Sincerely,

We decided to take a last minute mini-trip out of town for the weekend, and the Historic Inns were among the few places that still had availability. The reviews were fairly accurate. Details, from making the reservation through checkout, are below. But, in a nutshell, if you're looking for a short stay in Annapolis, and want to be in the heart of the main city, this is a very solid option!

Details:
Making the reservation: I wanted to make sure we had a great room, so rather than booking online, I called the hotel directly and spoke to Eric. Eric was extremely patient with me as I asked him about a dozen questions ranging from room size, to noise level, to views, etc. (Though he did try a hard sell on one of the more expensive rooms at first...but I can't fault him for that!) Ultimately we settled on the Queen room in the Maryland Inn, and he promised me he'd make a note in the reservation that we wanted a view of the water. A solid B+/A grade here.

Checking-In: Since we were only going to be in town for a short stay, we arrived well before check-in time. The staff was extremely courteous and allowed us to leave our car with the valet before we came back to check-in. After touring the city for a few hours, we arrived back around 3:30 (30 minutes after the check-in time we were told). However, our room was not yet ready. This was both a positive and negative. The negative is obvious ... check-in is advertised at 3, and we were unable to get into our room until 4 pm. However, the positive is that this is because they had looked at Eric's note in our file and had upgraded us to a suite which had a view of the water! A+ on the attention to detail ... C on the check-in time.

Accommodations: This is a challenge. Our room did have a great view of Main Street all the way down to the water. But I would hesitate to call it a "suite." It was a suite in the sense that there were 2 different rooms in the unit: a sitting area when you first walk in the door, with a lopsided sofa-bed, coffee table, desk, and TV; and a tiny bedroom with a Queen size bed and TV. The bedroom was very crammed, leaving little room to walk around. And the two rooms were adjoined by the bathroom, meaning that if someone was showering, the other person had to stay in the room they were in. The bed was not very comfortable at all nor were the pillows. Also, we were led to believe there would be complimentary coffee service in the rooms, but this did not exist (which stinks b/c I love my coffee!). However, with all that said, the room was very clean, had a great view, and the sitting area was very comfortable. C+ on the room. (BTW, we were in room 412 of the Maryland Inn)

Location: PERFECT!! The Maryland Inn is situated right at the top of Main Street, where all of the best shops are, and it is a 10-15 minute walk down to the docks. If you walk in the other direction, on West St., you get easy walkable access to some romantic restaurants (Carpaccio was our favorite). Definitely a perfect spot. A+ here w/o any hesitation.

Checking-out: Very simple process, and the valet brought our car to our building for us in the torrential downpour that was happening when we left. A here.

Overall, I'd give the place a solid B. We may explore other options when we go back to Annapolis, but the Historic Inns will remain on the short list (we may try the Calvert Inn building next time).

Room Tip: Room 412 in Maryland Inn had a great view ... but the layout is very odd and inconvenient.

Room 317 in the Governor Calvert House was quaint and romantic. The only issues we encountered were the iron cord kept retracting so we could not use the iron and one of the lamps did not work. Also, the bed was extremely uncomfortable and the pillows were lumpy. We did not get a good night sleep. Since we were there only one night, it was not worth reporting. We had been here four years ago and stayed in the Robert Johnson House. I do prefer the Governor Calvert House.

Dear Robin G:

Thank you for posting your comments on TripAdvisor. While I was glad to read you found the Governor Calvert House to be a romantic venue, I certainly wish you would have let us know about your discomfort with the bed; we would have done our best to alleviate that or perhaps provide a different room.

I’m happy you enjoyed your stay overall and look forward to seeing you again soon.

We wanted to be in historic Annapolis. The Maryland Inn, one of 3 properties in the Historic Inns of Annapolis, and located on Church Circle, turned out to be perfect. Check-in is several blocks away at the Calvert House, on nearby State Circle. Our room (#400) on the top floor was VERY spacious, although looking at floor evacuation plan, all rooms were not as spacious. The bath, however, was quite small, but very well appointed. Our queen size bed was comfortable and the linens very nice. There was no in-room coffee, but plenty of free coffee & tea in the inn's lobby each morning. Plus, there was even a Starbucks in the Inn basement (accessed from the street)!

The location was perfect. There was a self-park garage 2 blocks away so no need to valet park and an ample loading/unloading zone outside the inn. There is an elevator, but still some stairs to access the "first floor and elevator". Our room was actually on the 3-1/2 floor so there were several stairs to reach it from either the 3rd or 4th floor elevator stops. The Naval Academy, the Maryland State House and all historic places plus restaurants and wine bars were all within walking distance. Our A/C was fairly noisy and cooled "relatively" well, but otherwise a great place and a great stay.

Room Tip: Study floor map or inquire when reserving since some rooms are very spacious, but some are much smal...

Dear MaroonDawg67

Well, I could start by saying “Gig ‘em” but I lived in Austin and followed a team of a different color. Regardless, I want to thank you for the detail of your feedback and tell you how pleased I was that you so enjoyed your stay and found our location to rank a "5."

You did a great job noting that our rooms come in a variety of sizes and pointing out a parking option for those who chose not to use the convenience of the hotel valet parking service. We appreciate your patronage and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

My husband and I spent three nights in the charming, historic Maryland Inn. The hotel was clean, affordable, and the staff members we encountered were friendly and helpful. We especially liked its location--close to everything. My husband liked having coffee available to him in the mornings.

Room Tip: Rooms away from elevator and ice machine.

Best value in Annapolis. Close to most things you're interested in. Friendly, helpful staff, knowledgeable about the area and dining options. Rooms are not palatial but comfortable with a decent view. Free internet and coffee in the morning. Great concept and nicely done.
