“Great Place to Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

We have stayed in this hotel 4 or 5 times over the last few years. We recently stayed for 5 nights over USNA Commissioning Week. Just fantastic. We originally booked a small room, just for my wife and myself. But with family and friends coming in from all points, we needed a bigger room to function as a meeting place before the day's activities. After 2 nights, we requested, and were moved, to a suite that was perfect for our needs.
Everybody had a place to sit as we planned the day. And they had to drive into town. We were already there.

We stayed in the Maryland House, right on Main Street. It's a quarter mile from the main gate, and an easy walk. There are dozens of restaurants and shops within 5 minutes. The building itself has a tremendous historical ambience. Some of the floors are a bit crooked, but the whole place exudes colonial America. It is also upgraded to modern building codes.

The beds were very comfortable, also. The staff is attentive and polite, and they tried very hard to make us comfortable - a complete success! I'd recommend this hotel to anyone going to Annapolis. We'll see you next time we travel there.

Room Tip: They Maryland House is between 2 busy streets. It quiets down nicely at night.

My husband and I stayed at the Governor Calvert House, Historic Inns on our last visit to Annapolis. The rooms were a traditional style hotel room but the furniture was very charming and the beds were wonderful, (one of our top priorities in sleeping quarters!) The rooms have window into the interior courtyard. The Hotel itself is peppered with historical pictures and information about the hotel and its surroundings. One room off the lobby is really very interesting; it has a glass floor that exposes the heating system used in the greenhouse of the original buildings, (you don’t see that at every hotel!) The absolute highpoint of this hotel is its staff. They are professional, friendly and they literally do everything they can to accommodate your needs. I had left a bag of souvenirs at the hotel (I think I left it out front when I was getting in the car) and they retrieved it and held it for my daughter to pick up. Overall I would rate them “A” in terms of a Hospitality team. (Special thanks to Kaitlin who really hooked us up with a good room during the trying times of “Commissioning Week” for the Annapolis Naval Academy!) Next time we need a room in Annapolis we will definitely go to Historic Inns of Annapolis.

We stayed at the Robert Johnson House for 2 nights over commissioning week. Fantastic location. The room was lovely and clean. Our guests loved the inn. It is an old Inn, the furniture was appropriate, old style but in very good condition. If you are looking for a pool and room service, this is not your hotel, but if you want an old style, historic hotel convenient to downtown this is your place! I would stay here again!

We stayed in the Maryland Inn which is a few block walk from where you check-in. It is the best location if you want to be where all the action is. It is at the top of Main Street and close to all the restaurants/bars. We had a (2) bed room that was larger than most modern hotels. The AC unit worked well, but was a little loud. Their were a total of (3) windows in the room/bathroom with views of the capital building. The Memorial day parade went right by the hotel and we had great front row seats on the porch of the inn.

Valet parking cost $24, but you can have your car pulled out as many times as you need.

The front desk staff were nice and helpful.

Dear PlanAway:

Thank you for posting your feedback about your recent stay at the Historic Inns of Annapolis. I was delighted to see that you enjoyed our location and found the oversize room and natural light from the room windows to be pleasant. I hope you enjoyed the parade; you’ll have to come back next year and compare the two parades!

We appreciate your patronage and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

I stayed in the Governor Calvert property on a business trip. The location of the property is lovely, very close to restaurants and attractions. The hotel staff was very friendly. It is a historic inn, and while lovely in some respects, the room was tired. The furniture consisted of pieces that were worn out and not particularly interesting. The air conditioning would not reach the set temperature and was loud. Overall, however, I enjoyed my stay.

We loved the location and enjoyed a nearby restaurant very much. As with many historic properties, there was a musty odor. We've stayed in many old inns that didn't have this issue. The staff was nice and they did move us to a different room which was a little better. We enjoyed walking around the area more than being at the inn though.

This hotel has 3 properties. The Governor Calvert property seems to have been updated, although it is the least convenient. The Maryland Inn is tired and old. Our suite had a walk-in closet with no light, there is no room service, there is no room in the bathroom for toiletries. We did have 2 window!! air conditioners which almost shook the rooms while running. The upside to this is that it helped to drown out the noise from the street and the ice maker in the hall. The bellmen and front desk are helpful and cordial, but the rooms are sub par.

Dear KathyKnoxville:

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you were not more pleased with your room at the Maryland Inn. All of our buildings have strong roots in the community and date back to the 1700’s. I mention this as a contributing factor and part of the reason for the window units that are used in that building. You make a valid comment about the bathroom shelving issue and we are working to resolve that by installing shelves over time.

We appreciate your patronage and hope you will give us another opportunity on a future visit.

Sincerely,

Mike Radike
