“Of 9 hotels on this New England, this was a disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2009

At check in we were given a letter from the General Manager who suggested we visit TravelAdvisor.com and tell of our experience, so this was our experience

My wife and I were on a 15 day tour of the New England states. During this time we stayed at 9 different hotels. The biggest disappointment was the Holiday Inn, Augusta Maine.
Upon arrival I asked if Priority Club Gold Members could check in before 2PM and was told no. I did register and we returned later that evening. The clerk was kind enough to put us on the first floor after I explained my wife inured her leg.
The next afternoon, I attempted to enter the room and was “locked out”. Someone had indicated we were registered for one night although it was clear with my on-line reservation and at time of registration we were scheduled for 3 nights. This was corrected. However that evening when we returned to the room late, we saw that it had not been cleaned, beds not made, linens not changed. Again, the clerk on duty was kind enough to get clean towels.

At no time was there any acknowledgment of the Priority Club Gold membership,. I mention this because at our other Holiday Inn stays on this trip. The desk clerks did acknowledge this.

We were very pleased with our stay. Our children ate free in the restaurant and the food was prettty good. We did have a problem with our keys not working. It was frustrating to have to go around the building to the front desk to set things right but the staff was curtious and fixed them quickly. The carpet was worn and stained in some places but not awful.

Yep you can almost always count on a Holiday Inn. Everything was clean, comfortable, and convenient. You could even order room service (or pre-order breakfast) online!

One negative. The envelope soliciting tips for the room attendant....tacky!

Read the reviews and booked anyway as we got a good rate and only needed to sleep, breakfast and get on the road again. Hotel was easy to find. Check in was super fast and pleasant. All the staff went out of their way to accommodate us; immediately brought extra soap, etc. Room and bathroom were very clean - and I'm fussy! Beds and bath had 'crisp' and clean linens. Room smelled fresh, was quiet, nicely furnished. Bed was firm and very comfortable. Good assortment of pillows with more for the asking. I would book here again, even for an extended stay. This is not the Ritz but neither did we pay for the Ritz. Clean, comfortable, roomy with helpful, friendly staff. I was very pleased.

After reading the reviews for this hotel online, I was worried about staying here. If you are looking for a "ritzy" hotel this is not it. It appears that the hotel is going through renovations and is trying to improve. I wasn't too impressed when we drove up, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The rooms were very clean. The beds were good as was the bedding. The bathrooms looked like they had been recently renovated. I would advise people that it is very difficult to find a hotel in Augusta Maine during the summer. The only other option was a new Fairfield Inn, but that motel was much more expensive. The Holiday Inn is in a very nice area walking distance from the Convention Center and the Augusta branch of the University of Maine. There is a Walmart right across the street and other restaurants and shopping. Even though this hotel was not top of the line be advised that it was absolutely packed over the July weekend. The hotel could greatly improve just be making the front desk staff more attentive. For example, the garbage can right outside the front door was overflowing with garbage. The coffee station at the front desk ran out of coffee and was in disarray. The pool was older. The hotel could also update their fitness room. It is a fairly large room but they need some new machines in there. At least one elliptical and a recumbant bike would be nice. The housekeeping staff did a great job cleaning our room and the woman in charge of the houskeeping staff was very friendly and nice. Overall, if you are in Augusta Maine there isn't much of a choice for hotels. This one would be fine for a short stay. There is also a restaurant attached to the hotel - "the Ground Round". We did not eat there, but it was also packed with people.

Thank you for this review. I am glad that you pointed out that we are making an effort to improve our hotel. We've recently undergone a major renovation--and at the time of your stay we were about 90% through. Since that time we've re-sealed our parking lot, finished the majority of our inside renovations, and are in the process of landscaping now. This has been a year long process--and we're happy to be almost finished.

Our executive housekeeper, Kathy, is wonderful. I'll pass on your kind words to her. Also, for your information, we're adding new machines to the fitness room later this month. It's an exciting time here!

Thanks again for staying with us. We hope to see you again soon!

I've griped about Augusta's lodging stock before (see my review of the town's EconoLodge) but this time expected better with the Holiday Inn.

Apparently Holiday Inn, as a chain, is relaunching their properties with upgrades beds, bathrooms, and lobbies, and new signs. This hotel still has the old sign and a really drab exterior, but its clear they are in the process of making some improvements. My parents had stayed at the hotel in previous years and reported that the lobby had been refinished. There is now a flatscreen TV with CNN (or Wrestling, depending on which clerk is on duty) in one corner above a cheesy looking fake fireplace. But the floor tile looked improved and the front desk was new marble and wood. Still the lobby had the impression of a roadside motel, it was small and the furniture wasn't pareticularly attractive or comfortable. Did have free coffee and hot chocolate on one side and a Poland Spring water cooler on the other, which was nice. Did not walk into the Ground Round restaurant, which wasn't visible from the lobby.

Guestroom corridors were clearly being re-wallpapered, and in some places the wallpaper was complete and in others it wasn't and in others it was messily hanging off the wall.

Guestrooms also appear to have been fixed up. Bed was newish, that typical flower-print bed spread had been replced with something a little nicer, and the pillows were a tad nicer, but overall the bed still wasn't great, just average. TV was not flatscreen. Guestroom artwork was the drab watercolors from the 80s, but the room had a pretty big mini-fridge and a self-service coffee maker.

The bathroom was in the process of being restored and, while small, had a pretty nice marble vanity, good water pressure, and a curved shower rod. One piece of the wall covering was missing however, and had construction "gunk" all over it. Need to address that ASAP. Towels were average and the amenities, a bottle of shampoo/conditioner and a bottle of skin moisturizer, were Garden Botanika brand, never head of it and did not use. Two bars of soap were also included. No facewash or shower gel or liquid body soap.

Overall, was decent, but next time would like to try the newer looking Fairfield Inn on the west side of I-95.

I recently attended a conference at this location. While I didn't stay overnight in a room, I would be careful about selecting this as a location for your group's function. Two very different groups were booked in side by side locations in their two cramped function rooms -- creating so much noise we could barely hear. The chairs were crammed together so that we were unnecessarily piled on top of each other, and the food was absolutely dreadful. While the location off the Turnpike is convenient, that was about all it seemed to have going for it. Oh -- the bathroom was clean, I guess, I'll grant them that.

Thank you for writing. I am sorry that you had such a bad experience in the meeting rooms. I appreciate your comment and thank you for taking the time to evaluate us on this site. However, I should let you know that the Holiday Inn is not responsible for the meetings rooms. The adjacent restaurant has all control over the meeting space, scheduling, etc. We pass all of the leads we get off to them. We certainly strive to give our guests the most positive experience possible, and I hope that you'll come back to evaluate our hotel's guest rooms. Once again, thanks for responding! We appreciate the feedback.
