“School trip with 15 children!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Beautifully executed attraction. Museum was first rate. Everything is well described and child friendly (6+).
The 3D theatre is fantastic - it held the children's attention, Staff very friendly and helpful with lots of picnic areas. The restaurant is meant to be very good although we did not dine in it. The shop is wonderful - lots of different memorobilia to suit all budgets - really refreshing! Can't recommend more highly - a superb day out!!!

“One of the modern wonders of the world”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

The canal cannot be missed. However, we had the bad luck of seeing almost no ships go through it during our two hour lunchtime visit. This may be a daily thing -- the eastbound and westbound traffic is on a schedule because a portion of the canal is too narrow for ships to pass each other.

Surprisingly nice museum, good observation decks, hokey seven minute video presentation (English version), kid-friendly buffet with very average food at restaurant.

“Fun at the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

this visitors center is worth a visit. You have a perfect view of ships being processed throught the lock form a covered grandstand. Inside the center there is an excellent 10 minute 3D movie about the lock. There is also a museum which has inteeresting information as well as a simulator where you can try your hand as the pilot to navigate a huge cargo ship through the lock. Fun for Dads and kids alike.

“Post Panamax”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

It is estimated that the project will be completed by sometime 2014 and estimated cost of $5.3 billion. The country of Panama is expected to recover the costs associated with construction within 11 years. Panama is a great country, 1901 investors JP Morgan and Rossevelt would love that return.

Miraflores Locks had a very good visitor centre and museum of Panama Canal history. It will be a shame that the Post Panamax vessels will not be visible from the amazing observation deck in the near future. Well at least not up close like you are at the existing Miraflores Visitor Center. The new locks at Miraflores will take place of the old locks and Pedro Miguel locks as well from what I saw walking thru the museum. Hard to believe over 20000 men died in the construction of this massive project due to disease prior to 1904 under Ferdinand de Lesseps of Versailles (Suez Canal). Also presented Statue of Liberty to the Republic of the United States (1884).

In conclusion I think the Peterborough Lift Lock (1904) on the Trent-Severn was much more interesting on an engineering standpoint. But on overall size this is definitely one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World (ASCE). I would recommend visiting Miraflores Visitor Center if and when in Panama.

“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Good ship viewing opportunities and an excellent museum showing the construction of the canal. A taxi from the centre of town should cost no more than $10.
