“Casco Viejo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Started in the 1600's, as a more secure replacement for the original Panama Viejo, this charming area is currently being renovated. The streets, plazas, palaces, and churches provide a visual insight to the life and commerce centuries ago.

“If you are in Panama City anyway...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

If you are in Panama City anyway, this is worth a visit, particularly as the rest of the town is not much to explore. However, don' come here just because of it. There are some nice old buildings, but half of the quater is a big building site, and of the rest, again half looks more like a slum than an old town. It is really surprising that a relatively rich country such as Panama has not done more much earlier to save their buildings (just compare to the much criticised Habana Vieja). There are some decent restaurants around, and it is pleasant enough to walk through the narrow streets, but no more than that.

“Architectural gems but mostly run down/under repair”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

If you're thinking of an historical district like Quebec City or Barcelona, this ain't it. A closer comparison would be Intermuros in Manila -- some very nice old architecture but also an awful lot of abandoned buildings, streets blocked off for construction and general disrepair.

I realize Panama City isn't the wealthiest city in the world, but it seems wierd that this UNESCO World Heritage Site and potential fantastic tourist draw is missing basic infrastructure while other, boring districts seem much better kept up.

“Beautiful area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

This was a nice area to walk around for an afternoon. There were a lot of artisian stalls along the water front. They were repaving some of the streets when we were there, so the traffic was restricted. It was a good place for a drink, but most of the resaurants we checked were very expensive.

“City under construction”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

I hate to write a negative review on an historic old city, but I wanted to warn travellers that the old city is under construction. It will probably be a wonderful place to visit (the beauty of the renovated buildings is evident) in a couple of years, but right now it's a frustrating experience. Streets are impassable. It is difficult to find tourist sites and some of them are behind construction barricades. Plus, the day I visited, the President was in residence and a number of the streets were closed.
