“Class Hotel!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2007

I have stayed at this hotel on several occassions and certainly lives up to the JW Marriott name.

Location wise, it is a contentious issue. It is certainly not in a bad area and you can walk to a lot of nice restaurants and office buildings in the area. Likewise, Panama City is not that large so you can get around most parts of the city in 5-10 mins. I say it is contentious because I have stayed in the Miramar Intercontinental before, which overlooks the water and as such the view is a bit more aethetically pleasing.

Overall though the Marriott is the best business hotel in Panama City that I have experienced.

Service in the foyer cannot be faulted and the rooms were clean; well appointed and without fault. Room service is of a high standard and the executive lounge on the top floor is exceptional.

We booked our stay in the Marriott Panama City for 5 nights. We left after 2 nights. The hotel is very generic American (we are American but don't go abroad to feel like we never left the States). The rooms are small and seemed overcrowded with the Marriott trying to fit too much furniture, etc in the room. The food in the restaurants was very bland. The Panamanian staff obviously had been trained in the Marriott "style" but that doesn't seem natural for them at all. Panama City is a very vibrant, culturally diverse city and we thought it was a shame that local culture was very poorly reflected in the hotel.

Recently spend three nights at this excelent hotel. Arriving very late at night I was instantly disappointed that room with king size bed was not available. The hotel offered to change my room for the next two nights, but it was unnesesary. Room was spacious and extremely clean. Two double size beds were large and very comfortable. Pillows where just right and probably to many. Bar was stocked with good selection of drinks. The bathroom was spotless. Service at hotel was perfect. The coffee shop on ground floor was making a very tasty coffee. This is my third trip to Panama City and I would rate this hotel higher than Intercontinental Miromar and Decapolis. Location is very convinient for everything.

Compared to the other major hotels, I like the location. It is in a busy area w/ restaurants, international offices, major commercial avenues, casinos, and yet just about a 20 minute walk to the seaside Avenida Balboa. And it is also adjacent to beautiful Obarrio residential areas behind the hotel.
The lobby is comfortable, the front desk staff was always helpful and efficient. The pool and health club are clean and very pleasant. Gift shop had a nice selection, and good prices. Wake-up calls were prompt.
The rooms are just standard in size for a 4- or 5-star hotel. My room had an odd furniture arrangement with a bed alongside the window making opening the shade difficult. The closet was cheaply made. My room door shook a bit when the elevators opened - something to do with negative airflow. But the bed was super soft and full of pillows. The bathroom was large and lots of towels/robes/slippers but the tub/shower was small. Some nice electronics for CDs and iPods. The view (20th floor) was very nice - from mountains to sea.

  • Liked — Location. Fresh pineapple at breakfast.
  • Disliked — No free internet.

Lovely lobby and nice average size room. Great little coffee shop/pastry bar in the lobby as well as regular restaurant and sports bar. Nice work out facility and pool area. My only complaint is the poor concierge service. The girls at the desk didn't have many suggestions for us and it seemed like we had to provide the tours we were interested in and then they would get more details for us. There were no brochures available about sites and tours and the information they gave us a couple of times was not correct or not what we were looking for. Maybe they don't cater to tourists, as I noted that the majority of people staying here looked to be business people.

  • Liked — Lovely lobby and rooms with nice pool.
  • Disliked — Conceirge service was terrible.

It is not often we experience problems with our Concierge staff, and we appreciate every single comment we get so that we can improve our guests' experience in our hotel.

I will be forwarding this review to them so that they can take note and better all those little things for future stays.

We were escaping from the Decameron. We tried to get into the Marriott Courtyard as it is next to the mall with the Louis Vuitton, Chanel etc but it was full. Paid AAA (CAA) rate of $140 and were so happy at this hotel. Wonderful location. Strange bathtubs, quite low to the floor.

Next door at the casino there is a buffet lunch for $2.99 Monday to Friday.

Beautiful rooms, (we had two), amazing gym open 24 hours, great little pool and hot tub also open 24 hours. Lobby to die for. Nice little coffee place in the lobby.

Concierge desk staffed by attractive women with good command of English but not very sophisticated. Don't take the hotel cabs they cost 3x as much as on the street.

  • Liked — large rooms
  • Disliked — shallow bathtubs
