“A ballet of Langostines”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012 via mobile

Well we decided to try the langostinos and we did not go wrong. Spicy shrimp and garlic shrimp were perfectly cooked, they arrived looking like ballet dancers on the plate and they were delicious. We decided on the guayaba pie for dessert and it was the perfect end to the meal, if you have a sweet tooth you should not miss this pie. Very good service through out, a very good place to eat.

“Best meal of our entire trip to Panama, outstanding meal on any continent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2012

We ate here our last night in Panama. We had had good food everywhere--fresh fish, great fruits and vegies, etc. But nothing we ate compared with this fantastic and creative meal at Barko Bistro where things were prepared simply with lots of flavor. My husband and I share the mixed plate appetizers which consisted of typical Panamanian foods--but better than anywhere else since they weren't overcooked, and were very flavorful. There was a cornmeal bolio (?) that was soft, a chorizo, some marinated beef on a Panamanian tortilla (corn--but again, flavorful and not overcooked), even a piece of cheese--but with spices and olive oil that gave it flavor. I keep saying "flavorful," because that's the word that comes to mind with everything we ate--interesting and potent flavors. We also had the cerviche which was fresh (typical in Panama) and sweet (which was a nice change). My husband had the Paella risotto which again, was flavorful since as a risotto, there was cheese, and even the vegies were flavorful and not overcooked. I had the pepper-prawns, which were sweet, flavorful, and we joked that each one was the size of a chicken leg (okay...maybe quail--but they were super fresh).

We ate outside which was nice because the weather was pleasant and it was quiet. We peeked at the inside which was nice looking too. The service was also outstanding. My husband and I couldn't help sounding like San Francisco foodies as we went on and on about the meal--so the waiter asked if he could introduce us to the owner. Turns out she lived for a time in New York, which probably accounts for why the food tasted so interesting. We had gone to Manolo Caracol earlier in the week, but the food at Barko Bistro was much better (service too) and didn't have all the noise and hype. It was also just a few blocks from our hotel (Hotel Riu), so that was pretty convenient too. Casual dress was fine (as it was in most of Panama). Would definitely recommend eating here if you're looking for interesting flavors and a really nice meal.

One other thing--the menu is in Spanish only. The waiters all spoke English and made recommendations, so I wouldn't let that be an impediment to having a great meal.

“Nice atmosphere with many seafood choices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2012

We went to Barko because it was within walking distance from our hotel. They have a nice patio dining area which was very comfortable. Very good ceviche and many seafood choices. Our dinner was good nothing spectacular. Service was above average once we got the attention of a server.

“Great ambience, very welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2012

We arrived and were fanatically welcomed by the owner. Browsed through the entrance. Different ambiance outside and Inside. Went to the bar and sat down for a while. The service was Great, people where very friendly. We talked to Michael who was helping in the bar.

We stayed for about an hour. I strongly recommend Barko Bistro. You can really sense that the place has spark. Its just one of those places that you remember, that you like and recommend.
