“Mind blowing exploration of a culture I had no idea existed.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

The San Blas Islands tour was one of 3 positive experiences I had in Panama over a six day period and it may have saved our trip.

You must first prepare yourself for a 2 hour white knuckle drive through the jungle over hills and 2 lane roads. It's not necessarily scary, but it's pretty intense.

Once you arrive at the basecamp area you and your tour group will hop in to a panga style fiberglass boat and bounce along the waves for 20 minutes. You will pass a few islands covered in huts, this would be the big city for the native kuna people. These people truly spend their entire lives living in grass huts on islands smaller than a football field, in some cases smaller than a baseball diamond. You will first arrive at an island that 2 families live on, you can actually spend the night here if you want, and it's probably worth the experience. Crystal clear water, white sand beaches, oceans teeming with life. The natives will show you how they sail, and will probably go fishing for a lobster a few times. You can purchase the massive lobsters they catch and they'll cook them for you at the small restaurant which also sells amazing seafood and fruit.

After you lounge on the sand you'll hop back in your boat and go to an underwater island that allows you stand about chest high in the water and see for miles. You can also pick up the star fish that live on this little sandy area. Watch your step though, there are also urchins lurking beneath. Finally you are taken to another island for relaxation, swimming, and snorkeling by a small shipwreck.

As a warning I must say that this is in no way appropriate for people in wheelchairs, unless you can navigate the sand with confidence. 50% is swimming activities, so be sure you can swim, or at the very least float admirably.

Booze, Bottled Water, Breakfast, and Lunch were included. This was a great experience, I would strongly recommend it.

“Pills for sickness!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

That is the solution! San Blas is an amazing place, the experience of having a hut five metres from the sea is incredible but the road to get there by jeep is really twisting. So , take Dramamine and enjoy the ride. It is three hours and then a boat to the island where you will be staying. When you hire the tour ask the person in Panama city for the exact name of the Kuna Chief of the island you are staying in. When you arrive to the port they will ask who are you staying with. There are aroung 365 islands some of them have these huts for tourists. You will be staying in paradise! They include meals, take some snacks or any other thing you would like to eat cause meals are ok but there is nothing to buy in case you want something extra. If you visit Panamá you cant miss San Blas.

“The San Blas Islands and the Guna People”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

I cannot believe the ignorant remarks that were made about the native people of San Blas. The road is very long...like two hours, but it is worth seeing all the beautiful vegetation. Although you get charged for entrance and transportation fees, the world you are about to see is incredible! You feel in paradise and at peace with God and nature there. The native people were very hospitable with us, and we never were forbidden to take pictures...just don't take pics of the guna people without permission, because most of them think that pictures steal their spirits! I have incredible ones and I was inspired to write a book about their myths and beliefs and their interesting history, of which many, many scholars have wrote. It is the land of the albino indians; of the magic molas, marvelous embroidered cloths embeded in their blouses, which replaced the colorful tatoos with which they painted their bodies; here, the chamans sing to take away sickness accompanied with their spirit helpers, the uchus; it is the land of revolutionary people who don't let any body manage their lives and they are an example of democracy and political organization for the most complicated governments...people so proud of their tradition, yet so open to the value of other cultures. And of course, here you can eat the most delicious lobster and fish you have ever tasted. If you think you are going to sleep in hotel suites, forget it. This is a life lesson for anybody who visits them....well worth any uncomfort and I would advise those who visit the Guna people to read about them, so when they go overthere they can look them for their real worth. Make sure you go to an island which offers you a room with real beds....they have them... and even with mosquito nets and solar light. A+++++++
