“Utilitarian Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Other reviews knock this hotel for being noisy, but consider that this hotel is located in an intensely humid environment where mold would grow quickly if allows to fester within carpeting. It's a utilitarian hotel at best, with the pool being more akin to a water fountain and the bar in the lobby being staffed at points, but do not inflate your expectations here...it's a hotel for people doing business within the City of Knowledge or just looking for a brief commute to the Panama Canal. There's an accommodating Irish pub just next to the parking lot names Mick's (Mick is from Dublin, Ireland) that serves some cold beer and decent garlic fries.

This hotel is NOT close to the airport and you will absolutely need to drive or take a taxi anywhere you want to go, but if you happen to find yourself searching for hotels of this caliber in Panama City, then chances are you're not there for a vacation anyways.

We just stayed at the Holiday Inn Panama Canal for two nights. We were pleasantly surprised as the hotel was beautiful, had delicious food, attentive staff and centrally located for our activities. It is right next to the canal for a easy trip to the Miraflores Visitor Center. It is also a 10minute trip to the regional Allbrook airport which was convenient when we had to catch a 6am flight. We also appreciated the free WiFi, nice pool and great air conditioning.

Note that this hotel is not in the center of Panama City. There is nothing in walking distance so plan to eat before you arrive or eat in the restaurant (delicious). However, it's perfect as a jumping off point for Gamboa, Canal trips or other excursions.

Nice, clean rooms with good beds and friendly personell. Very nice breakfast.
Not too far from the city, and view to the canal (only if you have a room in the front-side on th 5th floor or higher!).
BUT !
I will never go back due to all the noise (i have stayed at the hotel for many weeks, work related).
The corridors have very bad acoustics, and you wake up every time someone is walking past your room.
Also, the air-conditioning is a big, noisy device under the window (not a split-unit), that blows the cold air straihgt onto the bed.
Every sunday, the arrival of some private organisation with people who are running is placed in front of the hotel. Forget about sleeping, because they have a big, loud sound system, and a guy shouting the names of people arriving. In between you can 'enjoy' techno-music instead of sleeping. This starts at 7am and ends around 9am. The management of the hotel told me they can not do anything about it, so I checked out and moved to a different hotel. They will never see me again.
So, if you need your sleep, don't go there. If you don't sleep too much anyway, enjoy it, the rooms are good!

With only a few days to see the sights of Panama and the Canal, I was so impressed by the general level of service and amenities on offer, but most impressive of all was the help offered and knowledge and advice shared by reception staff. With many international chain hotels, guests can feel they are simply a booking that needs to be processed. This hotel managed to carry out its duties so smoothly and to find time to carefully answer what in my case was a large number of questions and requests. Well Done!

Room Tip: If interested in the whole Panama Canal thing, the premium asked for a canal facing room is probably...

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night on both ends of our trip to Panama. I booked it with points and we were put on the top floor in the same room both nights, approximately in the middle of the building facing the canal. The room was clean and comfortable with a nice view of the canal. I'm not sure you could see the canal below the top two floors though because of trees, so keep that in mind.

They left us a bottle of wine and Ferrero Rocher both nights as well, which was a nice touch. Except they didn't leave us a cork screw, which always seems to be a problem in hotels, why can no one get that right? We called down and asked for one and they said they didn't have any. So then we brought the wine bottle down to the bar and asked if they could open it. Eventually they got it open. I'm just shocked that a cork screw wasn't readily available.

Anyway, the hotel didn't seem very busy. They gave us a few drink vouchers and they had a little game that they had us play when we checked in, which was weird, but cute. Basically you took a colored ball out of a bingo roller thing and you got something, like free bottles of water or a cookie.

We didn't try the pool, but note that it's really quite small and it looked almost kind of like it had soapy bubbles in the middle. But that could be from the little fountain they have in it.

Anyway, most of the staff was pretty nice and accommodating. The buffet breakfast was pretty decent, a nice variety with fruit, waffles, cereal, eggs and the like. The room was clean, hotel was quiet and the view was pretty alright. I'd stay again for a decent rate in $$ or points.

Room Tip: One of the top two floors to ensure a view of the canal, but really the top floor is best. Make sure...

So we needed a room for 1 night, web rate was $100 + $20 for extra person (That is the $100 rate is only for one person). I went to the front desk but they would not give me that rate, so I went to my car and booked the room on my smart phone., Check in went OK after that.

Wireless password works only for 1 computer and no way to log out so my wife could use it.

Calls to USA and Canada are SEVEN DOLLARS per minute.

Lots of other choices for my next stay in Panama City, you should check elsewhere.before booking a room here.

Room Tip: Book elsewhere

I stay here every time I come to Panama as it is close to our office. Yes, it is out of town but taxi fares are not high and the view of the canal is wonderful, even for someone not interested in ships. Get a high floor with canal view and just watch the ships going into and out of Miraflores locks. Wonderful.

The rooms are reasonable with a good size and a comfortable bed. Wired internet is free and wifi (which can be a bit patchy at times) is also available. Clean and comfortable but some might find the airconditioning a bit noisy (I don't). The bar is a bit small and basic but the restuarant is quite good. Nice bar 50 yards away which does decent food as well.

The staff are extremely helpful and very cheerful. I like this hotel

Room Tip: Ask for a canal view room and try to get 5th or 6th floors for the best view. get up early in the mo...
