This was our first trip to Nicaragua and we spoke almost no Spanish. Also, our plane was scheduled to arrive in Managua after dark, 8 PM. Our plans included staying in Managua on the night we arrived, briefly touring the city the following morning, and then taking a bus to Granada in the early afternoon. Because of our lack of knowledge, we knew we would need help getting through the first few days, at least until we had our traveler’s legs. We chose Hotel La Pyramide because several of the reviews on Trip Advisor raved about how helpful the owner, Manfred Marotzke, was to them. We were not disappointed. Manfred met us at the airport, the next morning he drove us around to the sights in the city we wished to see, brought us to his favorite coyote (legal street money changer) where we bought the cordovas we needed at the official bank rate, and drove us to the bus station for the express bus to Granada, waiting to see us safely on the bus before leaving. Thanks to Manfred our first trip to Nicaragua was off to a great start.
We also stayed our last night in Nicaragua at Hotel La Pyramide. After two weeks, we were better able to get around on our own, but still Manfred was incredibly helpful. He drove us to his wife’s vegetarian restaurant where we had a delicious lunch that was well served in an elegant setting. After lunch he drove us to the central market so we could do some last minute shopping, instructed us on how to get a cab back to the hotel, and arranged for a taxi to take us to the airport at 5:30 the next morning.
Hotel La Pyramide has all the important qualities—It’s clean, quiet, well appointed and well priced, with air conditioning, plenty of hot water, a well-stocked and well-priced minibar, well located in a safe neighborhood with good restaurants nearby, and it serves a good breakfast on a lovely outdoor terrace. But its real strength is in deep knowledge and the gracious helpfulness of Manfred, its owner.
