La Pyramide is not just the best hotel in Managua, but is competing for the title of the best hotel in the world. It is all in the service. The hospitality of the owner Manfred (and his staff) is second to none. From the arranged airport pickup to our delayed flight (they checked the ETA with the airport first), to the drive back to the hotel (soundtrack by Bach), to arranging local currency (when we were too late for an ATM), and driving us to a wonderful local restaurant (as we arrived too late for their own). As we repeatedly said over our (incredibly good) meal, we don´t know how lucky we are.
The experience was all the more special due to the, lets face it, unfriendly and uninspiring reviews of Managua. La Pyramide is an oasis in what feels (to the outsider) like a chaotic city. Given the paucity of our Spanish, Manfred and his team made our introduction to Managua hassle free, dealing with our airline and the airport staff to track down our lost baggage, and taking us back to the airport so we could negotiate with an official to pick it up on a Sunday (otherwise closed). You don´t find this kind of service everywhere, Manfred feels more like an old friend than a hotelier.
It isn´t flashy, so don´t expect some large scale doorman assisted resort. It is a boutique hotel, with a pyramid shape, and rooms named after Egyptian gods (some may say a little quirky, i wouldn´t argue with that). What is important is that it is impeccably clean, with good sized rooms, and a comfortable bed. Meals are tasty (breakfast included), and all for less than the price of a rundown hotel in the US or Caribbean.
I´m looking forward to staying there again, on our way back through.
