“Best place in Managua!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Mike and Miranda were superb hosts and great company, the best we’ve stayed with on AirBnb (so good we stayed with them on our last nights). The farm is just south of Managua, out of the heat of the city and overlooks the Volcano Masaya. Upon arrival we were generously upgraded to their larger apartment which was was spacious and really well kitted out (all rooms are amazing). Breakfast was hearty with fresh fruit from their farm garden. The home-roasted coffee is a real treat. They were also incredibly helpful in terms of local information and giving us lifts to bus and taxi points so we could start our day. Incredible value for money given the room and the overall experience and service. (Mike also has a fascinating family history). Muchos gracias por todo Mike y Miranda!

We only had one night at El Porton Verde, but I am so glad that we chose to stay here over being in Managua for our last night (even with a 6am flight I can say this!) We had hired a driver to take us from San Juan del Sur to El Porton Verde and Mike suggested that we have our driver call his when we were a few minutes away for them to come and meet us at the gas station nearby. This worked out well - we transferred our bags over to the truck that the driver (might have been Mike's brother in law?) came in and were on our way. It's a pretty steep, bumpy road, so I think our other driver would have appreciated not having to drive it.

Mike was there when we arrived and we were greeted by his two friendly dogs and with welcome cocktails for our group of 4. He showed us our rooms (our friends rented the apartment and my boyfriend and I stayed in one of the bunk rooms beside it and shared the living space with them so it was perfect for us). We all sat out by the lovely pool and enjoyed the views over the hillside with our rum and cokes, dipped our feet in the pool, played some cards, and went for a walk through the "farm" to check out all of the fruits that they have growing there (recent addition was pineapple!)

By the time we came back and had a beer (Mike sold us some Tonas for $1 each which seemed more than fair), dinner was ready which we had in the apartment kitchen/living area (you could also eat upstairs at the bigger dining table overlooking the property if you wanted). We paid $5 per person and this was a great deal for the Nicaraguan enchiladas, rice/beans, and dessert that we were served (have to admit I'd been looking forward to the lasagna which was on the original "menu" but these were good too and one final Nicaraguan dinner on our last night was nothing to complain about). The rest of the night we actually just hooked up an ipad to the TV in the living room and watched a movie, but it was the perfect place for us to unwind after our 2 week trip before heading home the next day.

The bunk beds were just fine, nice bedding and the room was clean (small, but for the price, just fine, and with the apartment main area to use as well this was plently for us). We had a shared bathroom which down the hall and the water was hot with good pressure, also very clean.

Best part of our stay was Mike - perfect communication during the booking process as well as before we arrived, and he even got up at 3:30am the morning we had to go so that he could get some breakfast together for us before driving us to the airport at 4:00am... he only charges $20 for airport pickup/drop off... seems almost too cheap to me (especially at that hour!) but we certainly appreciated it!

We wish the best of luck to Mike and his family with this business - well worth the 25 minute drive to the airport at the crack of dawn to get one more full day of vacation in before leaving the next day, such a beautiful property.

Room Tip: The apartment was really great to have, but if you're just in and out, the bunk rooms are also f...

We stayed for one night at this very homey B&B. The view was tranquil, and the room we stayed in very comfortable. Mike was accommodating to us, showing us some of the sights, and both picking us up from the bus station and delivering us to the airport for an early flight.

Incredible views! Spent 3days during a 5 week trip around Nicaragua. Good breakfasts included, nice pool almost 3 meters deep on the one end. Very Quiet(hard to find). Room was super clean with good breeze being up high. The best part of our stay was meeting the owners Mike and Miranda who are terrific hosts and genuinely great people and speak fluent English and SpanishMike took us on a tour which included much of Managua and the Masaya Volcano. The room we stayed in was spacious with a nice kitchen. You will get to meet Odie and Gigi the 2 friendly pet dogs. Gigi loves to challenge guest to a race, racing along side the pool while you have to swim and Gigi always wins. Mike and Miranda gave us an interesting insight to Nicaragua. Moto taxi's take you down the hill for a few cordoba's HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Robert @ Cynthia Duffy

Room Tip: All rooms have great views and the room with the kitchen is awesome

Our vacaction was very relaxing, peaceful and the harmony of the house and the farm field view make you feel stress free, breakfast was excellent Mr . Mike & his wife Mrs, Miranda treat us not like guests but like Family, unfortunately we did not have enough time to spend in the house to jump on the pool. We personally recomend this hidden paradise in the near areas of mayor points of interest like volcan Masaya, city of Masaya ,Coyotepe Fort, city of Managua, city of Granada, ect,

I stayed one night with a friend so we would be close to the Airport for our early mornng flight out. We were in one of the bunk bed rooms which are small but clean and have very comfortable beds. Mike met us at the bus station from Leon and as arranged took us on a tour to the Masaya Volcano, out for lunch and then to the market to do some shopping. The cost of the extra tour was very reasonable and Mike made sure that he was taking us where we wanted to go.

In the morning we had an early breakfast before leaving for the airport before 6:00 a.m. We were given a choice of what we wanted (American or Nicaraguan).

Driving up to the place from the highway you may wonder what you have got yourself into on the bumpy, narrow, dirt road but once you arrive you will be pleasantly surprised. The rooms and pool overlook the volcano and the view is great. You won't realize you are on the edge of a large city.

Just got back from a trip to Nicaragua, we purchased a home on the beach and we were looking for a place to stay on the first and last days of my trip to be close to the airport. We are so happy to discover Farmstay with wonderful hosts Mike and Miranda. Mike picked us up at the airport then to his beautiful B&B the next morning wonderful Nicaraguan breakfast then he drove us to our home, 4 days later he came and picked us up and brought us back to his B&B for a day of relaxing before we left the next morning. Mike and Miranda provided us with lunch and dinner as well as cocktails all afternoon and evening, the next day he again dropped us off at the airport. The hosts go out of there way to help in any way possible I do not speak Spanish so Mike communicated to my caretakers for me when he was at our home. There B&B is beautiful with a gorgeous view and gorgeous pool the food is Nicaraguan and delicious. One of the best features is there beautiful White Poodle GiGi who is playful and friendly and fullfilled my wifes longing for our dog back home. We am returning in January and can't wait to see Mike, Miranda, GiGi and Odie again.

Room Tip: The appartment room is perfect size for a family.

Hello and thanks for your inquiry about Farmstay El Porton Verde. Room offerings include: deluxe pool front apartment, quad bunk bed rooms, and en-suite rooms with private bath. As an alternative to the big chain hotels in hot and dirty downtown Managua, we offer a very comfortable and quiet bed and breakfast ambiance that lovers of quality lodgings with an eco-tourism aspect are finding very attractive. As we say here at the farm, "We are located in Managua, but being here feels like a world away..." We are located approximately 25 minutes drive from the airport and provide transportation to and from MGA airport. However, we are a small farm in the hills at 1,000 feet of elevation with tremendous views towards Masaya Volcano and the local mountains, so the ambiance is anything but what you will find in the city center. ... more   less
