“What a Find Better than Expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Great welcome from Zoya, with coffee & biscuits plus a smile.
We had the Suite, Number 5, very large & very clean. Well decorated, good firm bed, also a free room security safe.
Good Shower high water flow & very hot also towels were of a very good quality.
Free WiFi & can borrow Laptop with no charge.
Excellant Breakfast brought to room at the required time, consists of Cerials, Toast, cakes, Cheeses, Jam/Honey plus fruit juice & coffee.
All this & the Sunflower is 3 minutes walk from the main square.
You should go there!

What a pleasant surprise! This hotel is just a block off of Maidan Square and faces a quiet parking/courtyard. Our room was absolutely spotless, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast they bring to the room is plentiful.

I definitely recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: #3 has a small balcony - not all rooms do.

Stayed here for one night while travelling through Kiev, and have only great things to say about the Sunflower hotel. The room was extremely clean and well maintained, the service was great and friendly, and the breakfast was simple but very very nice (and delivered to the door at the agreed time). I can recommend this place to anybody!

We stayed here for 3 nights and were very impressed with the friendliness and level of service provided by the staff. We arrived late in the evening and were greeted with a tray of tea, biscuits, fruit and pastries. Very welcoming. The room was bright and spacious, the bed comfortable, and there was sufficient wardrobe and surface space to spread out. The bathroom was well appointed, with good water pressure. Everything was spotless in both the bathroom and sleeping area. The air conditioner is almost essential, as the room was quite stuffy. Breakfast is brought into the room on a tray - juice, pastries, corn flakes, coffee or tea, yoghurt, fruit and toast with butter, honey and jam. Adequate, but it's not the way I like to eat breakfast. One misses a central dining or sitting room. Excellent location - literally 3 minutes from the main square and within walking distance of many of Kiev's attractions. At $130 per night, it was probably quite expensive, but then Kiev is an expensive city for what you get, and the location and service were excellent. The staff were extremely helpful and their level of English certainly made things easier for us.

This is a jewel of a little hotel located on a quiet side street in the center of Kiev's old city. Our room, #1, was spacious with a good sized bathroom. Reasonably comfortable bed. Staff is very helpful. It is pretty well signed, so we didn't have a problem locating it with our taxi driver. A nice, simple continental breakfast is served in your room. Spotlessly clean. It is a very good alternative to larger hotels. It is personal and warm. Only one less than positive thing for us was that our room was cold.

Room Tip: For a quiet room and a walk up only a couple of flights of stairs, room #1 was comfortable and spaci...

For its location, service, price, and personability, the Sunflower B&B was just the spot to enjoy the best of what Kiev has to offer. It's a modest (but awesome!) bed-and-breakfast operation on the second floor of an unassuming apartment building—accessed through a small alleyway. (Some have written that it's hard to find, but it is not at all. There's a lit sign clearly visible from the street.) Here are some of the many reasons it's so great.

LOCATION: Directly off the centrally located Maydan Nezalezhnosti (a historic central square of the city), Sunflower put us immediately at the heart of it all. It's easily within walking distance of St. Sophia's Cathedral; the shopping, restaurants, and nightlife of Khreshchatyk Street; the historic Anredreyivsky Uzviz; and the Lavara.—And if you don't care to walk, there's a subway station right on the square. All other factors aside, the location does not get any better than this!

SERVICE: But perhaps better than the location is the service! We were greeted upon our arrival with tea and cookies. Because there were so few rooms, we really did get a great deal of personal attention. Though the place was booked, we never saw any of the other guests. The breakfast (coffee, juice, cereal, yogurt, warm pastries, etc.) arrived promptly (at a time we chose) on a wheeled cart every morning, and was a terrific way to start a day of getting to know a new city. The front office, which is staffed 24 hours, was always willing to help with directions, recommendations, and communications in Ukrainian. (Not all of the office attendants spoke fluent English, but that didn't stop them from trying to help us every way they could.) The last was especially important in arranging for a taxi to the airport in the middle of the night during a snowstorm.

PRICE: As far as mid-range accommodations go in Kiev, it's my understanding that a lot of the big Soviet-era hotels are generally expensive, outdated, and impersonal. Sunflower is the opposite on every front. We stayed in an immaculately clean, charmingly appointed (sunflower-themed, of course) room with a queen-size bed and en-suite bathroom for about US$100 a night (booked through booking.com). This INCLUDED breakfast, two bottles of water every day, cable TV (including English-language news channels), and free wifi. In the middle of a big, bustling European city, Sunflower's a bright little oasis, and an affordable one at that.

PERSONABILITY: As I said, because of its size, each guest gets a lot of personal attention. For example, we were to fly out of Kiev in the middle of the night during an enormous snowstorm. In our rush to get out the door in the face of the increasingly treacherous roadways, I left a gold ring of tremendous sentimental value in the room. Hours later I realized it was missing. Sunflower not only let me know via e-mail that they'd found the ring, but worked tirelessly with me, Ukrainian customs, and an international shipping company to send the ring home to me in the U.S. That, I think, speaks volumes about how Sunflower treats its guests, exemplary by any standards.

So much of what was wonderful about our trip to Ukraine was because of our awesome stay at Sunflower B&B. Without hesitation, I say it's the only place to stay in Kiev.

Room Tip: Even the economy-level room we stayed in had a beautiful hardwood floor, fresh paint, and an updated...
