“Back to USSR”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

If you are searching for some unusual impressions, or experience a nostalgie, this is a place for you. Hotel Ukraine combines the glamour of the grand style Soviet hotel and the same kind of service. Positive sides: you will probably get the great view to Maidan (I did); the building itself is to a certain extent "historic" - one of the Stalin-style high-rises. But do not be surprised when you will be required to leave your passport at the reception (which is officially illegal btw). Breakfast is also coming from some old times - this may be treated as good or bad; at least you will definitely not stay hungry. The furniture is OK but that is all (I would not put a 4-star category for the room, that is for sure). Wifi is for pay at some floors (at mine it was for free, but I don't know the reason :) ). Location is one of the strong sides - it is as center as it can be. And the look from outside is of course impressive.

Room Tip: Try ask for a Maidan-facing room I am not certain if they are eager to fulfil such requests though...

Having stayed at luxury hotels in Russia I arrive Kiev and checked into a so-called 4-star Hotel Ukraine. I chose this hotel because it is most centrally located and in particular I wanted to sample the "Soviet style" that I missed out during Soviet time, and on both counts I am not disappointed. Location was the best and it really is Soviet (meaning not very comfortable). Despite the small and dated room the service is not bad and the breakfast also, and there is fast internet (if you plug in). And the price I paid at Expedia is really cheap. But the condition of the room does not justify it to be 4 star, though even so I may return as location is important.

Room Tip: Convenient location and a sampler of Soviet time "good" hotel to satisfy my curiosity.

In August 2013 I stayed 2 nights at the grand Hotel Ukraine which is in a commanding position in the centre of Kiev. It is apparently a Soviet era hotel and is in good condition , renovated and comfortable.
I would certainly stay there again as the location is central , my room was adequate not luxurious and the view from my room of central Kiev were very good.
The dining room restaurant was good for breakfast and I ate evening meals at the shopping centre restaurants immediately in front of the hotel.
Kiev is a big , interesting city.
The staff were helpful and the hotel was clean.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

We stayed in September 2013 when visiting for the football (soccer) international between Ukraine & England.

This hotel is exactly what you'd expect from a 1950's ex-Soviet hotel. Great if you like that!

From the outside it is very imposing & impressive. If you want to say "we are staying THERE!", it has the wow impact. The location can't be faulted. As close to the attractions of Kiev as you could wish for.

However, it's not as impressive when you're inside! It's likely that most of the place hasn't been renovated since it was built. The rooms definity have 1950's Soviet bathrooms - somewhat basic, but at least the showers have hot water.

The rooms themselves are relatively roomy, and the views from the balcony are impressive in 3 directions (if you're at the back, as our friends were, you see the car park). There was no outside noise in the rooms, so the double glazing works well. We didn't need aircon, but it was available in the room. The furniture is antiquated, but functional. Beds are reasonably comfortable, & matresses on the hard side. The TV (deep CRT!) had about 15 channels, with a small selection of international channels. The rooms felt secure, although have key locks rather than card locks. The rooms were clean, although very dated.

Lifts to the rooms were relatively quick, & many of them. We wern't there at a peak time, so didn't have to wait for more than 30 seconds for a lift.

Reception was fairly efficient. Checking in & out was faultless. Reasonable English spoken by everyone, except for room-change staff.

We didn't make breakfast on both mornings of our stay, but our friends said it was unimpressive.

We didn't use the bar in the reception, but it appeared to be open long hours.

There is also a 'revue bar' near the entrance. 100 Hrv entrance, but the drinks were cheaper than in most bars in the city.

We paid £70 per night for our rooms, which for Kiev is a steal, if you accept the place for what it is.

If you want a Western, modern hotel, then avoid! If you want a taste of Soviet culture in the heart of the city, then this is the place for you. We loved it!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front.

If and like me you try to stay out of the hotel chain groups, Hilton, Radisson, Accord etc., when travelling, on occasion you find gems and unpolished diamonds, this hotel however, and to use a geological analogy is of coprolite quality.

Externally the appearance is dated, yet beautifully stylish, a taster of former halcyon days.

As you enter the main reception, the concierge desk is small and completely underwhelming, as are the staff, some of whom i imagine have worked here since the hotel was built, and analogous to the various half hearted hotel makeovers over the years, have just pilled on more and more make up.

Lifts are too few in number, too slow and completely over worked. I have taken to using the stairs . . .. I'm on the 7th floor . . . quicker to walk than wait . . . . ..

Upon arriving at your floor, the lobbies are as similar as the remainder of the building, dated yet stylish and charming. There are no narrow corridors with rabbit box rooms every 3 paces. On each floor there is a 24 hr "maid" to assist with laundry and other issues; lifts aside! The laundry service offered is of an altogether higher quality than the remainder of the services the building offers.

Queen size double bed consists of 2 x ¾ beds pushed together, and the bedding comes from 2 x ¾ beds . . . wholly inadequate and uncomfortable.

Breakfast seating, on most mornings, was full to capacity, and the options were, to either sit on the floor, share a table with very large, very loud gorging Ukrainians / tourists, return in 30 minutes / 60 minutes, or to visit the visible McDonalds. Nearly forgot, bring your own cutlery the hotel doesn't have sufficient when the restaurant is full, there is no spare capacity.

I’ve have travelled and lived in Russia, China, Sub Saharan Africa, South Asia, South America, to name but some, and have eaten and enjoyed “local” foods from all regions. I can unequivocally state the food in the hotel is the worst I have ever eaten, not with respect to taste, but with respect to quality, preparation and freshness; truly appalling.

My discussion with the concierge / manager, with respect to food and seating and lack off therein were in short a wasted effort; shrugging of shoulders . . . . . . i believe in former CCCP times, this hotel would have been wonderful, alas however it would appear "modern" Ukraine is woefully under prepared for perestroika at this depth.

Room Tip: unless this is a freebee find somewhere else to stay

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time for such a detailed feedback. I am a new Head of sales and marketing at the Hotel "Ukraine", and understand that before we can regain the trust of the guests, we have a lot to do, to improve the service and conditions in the rooms.

You stayed at the Hotel, as I have understood from Your review, at the time of high season, and most services and equipment couldn’t cope with the load - from slow elevators to the lack of tableware in the restaurant. The same applies to the double beds - we have 180 standard rooms with quin size bed, but in Your room the beds were probably moved together (from two twin beds), because the doubles were sold out. We are really sorry for the inconvenience.

Now the Hotel has a new team and for the last 4 months we have managed a lot to introduce many changes:
- completely changed the composition of marketing and sales, we are ready to work in compliance with modern standards;
- we have completely new restaurant staff - from chef to waiters, and a new chef cooks deliciously and creatively, he participated in cooking show and conducted professional trainings - hope, guests will appreciate his skill;
- for groups we have developed some standard menus with a fixed value, completely changed the menu a La carte in the restaurant and the bar.
- developed and implemented Standards for Front Office and Housekeeping;
- We offer many different actions and discounts - You can find them on the Hotel website.

I hope that our efforts will not go in vain, and You'll decide to visit our Hotel again.
By the way, we have a regular guest program, and if You return next time, I will gladly give You a regular guest card, which offers 10% discount on accommodation service, sauna, laundry and a business center and also on the menu of bar and restaurant.
We will be glad to see You again as a guest of our Hotel.

usually i never write any reviews but i just wanted to warn people NOT to stay in here. this is a hotel from horrow movie. not only its beyond soviet union time with the same sort of square minded stuff but it needs major renovation. you can hear people walking upstairs and i personaly was scared to walk on the floor with my bare feets as its worser then in any hostel. to say that the bathrooms are disgusting is to say nothing- tipical public toilet would have nice tilling and sinks and a bath itself. at one point the flush just broke dawn! room decoration is way to old, the linens are 20 yers old and im not joking!!!! i was very pleased to have a room opposite independent square on the 10 floor it had a good view BUT on the weekends they play very loud music on square(some local bands i presume) which makes your stay unbearable. the food at breakfast is tastless, reminded me of hospital food. so please think twice if you wish to stay at this, i would say 1-2 star hotel and go through all this just for a great location!

Room Tip: good location. not to take a room facing the main square during the weekends

Dear Guest,

I'm really sorry that You had to experience discomfort in the hotel. Surely, the protests on Majdan could disturb Your rest, and, probably, the room in which You stayed, disappointed You.
Almost all rooms in the hotel are renovated, and only in Economy Rooms tiles in bathrooms remained since the hotel was build. We are aware of the discrepancy of these toilets to declared category of the hotel, and that is why we sell them much cheaper than the rest of the Room Fund. If something in your room doesn't work, you could just inform reception desk, and they have to change your room or call technical stuff to eliminate the problem.

For the last 4 months the Hotel has a new team, which aims to improve the quality of services, and provides service to the world standards. I hope that the guests will admire not only the location of the hotel, but the friendly staff, and the excellent relation price-quality.

We will be glad to see You again at the Hotel, to be able to change Your impression.

Stayed there for 5 days while I was on a business trip. Then suddenly there was a fire on the 8th floor (we stayed on the 4th), which was very scary, as we all had to evacuate the building immediately. The firemen worked well and extinguished the fire in half an hour.
The food is the same everyday, and the building is very soviet style. The beds are too soft, no a/c in the rooms. Wouldn't go there.

P.S. Location is the best )

Room Tip: Get a room on a lower floor, so that you can evacuate the building faster

Dear Guest,

Thank you for Your feedback. I am sorry that You have felt stress in the hotel during fire. Ignition has arisen due to one of the guests, who had used a faulty electrical appliance in the room, and, during the evacuation, he has not closed the door and window, allowing the spread of fire on the corridor. The hotel staff has responsible attitude
to the fire safety and, when the emergency happened, everyone acted quickly and smoothly, and I‘m very pleased, that at that day none of guests or staff suffered.

According service quality, I have to inform You, that we have changed the staff of the restaurant recently - we pay attention to a variety of breakfasts, and we can offer you an absolutely new menu A La Carte. Air conditioners are installed in all rooms, even in Economy Rooms.
Many thanks for helping us to improve the service in the Hotel.
