I visited Art Lounge Hostel, Kiev, as a solo traveller in November 2012 for three nights. The hostel was very easy to find based on the directions I had received, but without directions you may struggle. Once you have found Horkoho Street (Горького), walk up it and look for an arch on your left with a large 18 on the wall. The hostel is through the arch past a small car park, in building 18b, once there ascend the stair case and you should find the hostel.
I walked from the train station, which took approximately 30 minutes, through seemingly very safe streets (around the train station it may appear slightly dodgy, but as with anywhere exercise common sense). A lot of the street signs are in English as well, so don't worry if you can't read Cyrillic very well.
I arrived very early to the hostel (8 am, after a long night train from Lviv), but there was a member of staff available. I was allowed in and since the hostel wasn't fully booked I was shown my room and bed and allowed to use all the facilities there and then (I desperately needed a shower). I was booked into a six bed dorm that featured three bunk beds and plenty of power sockets. The room was very clean and excellent size.
The hostel featured a reasonably sized living room style area with TV. The kitchen was also very well sized and extremely well equipped with pots and pans and other cooking implements. There was a further lounge area featuring computers and sofas. Free wi-fi was readily available and excellent connectivity.
The other guest seemingly had been there for several months and were more like residents. However, they were extremely friendly and very happy to chat away. The owner/manager was extremely friendly and explained to me his vision of having lots of works of art on display (there was already plenty on show). He hoped that maybe it could showcase local young artists and maybe sell the works if people were interested.
The location of the hostel from central Kiev was excellent. It was possible to walk to Freedom Square in about twenty minutes. Alternatively a metro station was within five minutes walk (the metro is excellent and well worth visiting even as a tourist attraction).
Overall I would say my stay at Art Lounge Hostel was very good. I was made to feel very welcome and the location was great. This is probably not the place to go to if you wanted a 'party/travellers' hostel, but if you want to talk to locals and learn the culture better I would definitely stay here!
