There was a small sign outside of a sketchy building, which got sketchier once inside, that lead me to a beautiful hostel. This must have been a beautiful single family home at some point, which was reconfigured to a slightly illogical hostel.
This hostel is located in a fairly central location, though was very difficult to find. Manageable walking distance from the train station, though difficult to navigate. I had to ask people in the building next door for assistance in finding the hostel, and even they were unsure. Throw the directions the hostel provides out the window.
I traveled in the off season and got an eight bed room to myself for a portion of my stay, so that may skew my perception a bit. The beds were comfortable and I managed to get a restful night’s sleep. The lockers were ridiculously small, so bring a lock for your other bag (if you have more than one).
They had only two bathrooms, each with only one shower or bathtub with a shower head. Had to wait a few times to use the bathroom, this while the hostel was at about 30% capacity. This must be a nightmare in the peak season.
There was free Wi-Fi available at a decent strength, available throughout the entire hostel. One tiny shared notebook computer for guest access (though not always available).
There was a kitchen available to guests, though no breakfast available at the hostel. This made things a bit more difficult for me. Located within a 5 minute walk to a grocery store, which was convenient for getting breakfast breads / yogurts and a few beers for the evening.
It’s hit or miss with the staff in terms of helpfulness, though I must give a shout out to two members. One was very helpful with suggestions for food and sightseeing when I first arrived. Another was very helpful (and patient with me) in dealing with cancelled flights to NYC during the recent hurricane. She specifically allowed me to extend my stay for a few days and helped me to book, cancel and re-book taxi’s to the airport on a daily basis (even at 2:30AM).
