“Ran away to count stars...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2012

If you happen to visit Kyiv this week, don't waste your time trying to find this cutie. The monument was taken away by its author, Konstantin Skretutskiy, for the long-needed reconstruction.

They left the following announcement instead: "Ran away to count stars. I'll be back on May, 26".

“Smile-provoking!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2011

This cutie is probably the most touching monument in Kyiv.

Often referred to as The Hedgehog in the Fog, a hero of the fabulous short animated movie by Yurii Norshtein, which was an absolute cult for few generations in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet countries. This is why it is one of the most adored Kyiv monuments.

Yet, passing by this week-end, I was shocked to see it vandalized. A piece of “prickles” under the hedgehog’s left arm was torn out. And people started to nest coins into its framework, who knows why. If not restored till when you see it, please, do not contribute to this absurdity!

Situated at about 2 Reytarska Str., very close to St.Sophia Cathedral. Walk along Volodymyrska in the opposite direction from Bohdan Khmelnitski monument then turn right to Reytarska. There is a small square at the crossroad of Reytarska and Zolotovoritska streets and Georgiivski lane. The Monument to the Protectors of Ukraine’s Borders stands in the middle of it. And the hedgehog is to its right, across the road.

This small sculpture, contributed by Kyiv Landscape Initiative, is made from the dead tree stump lavishly covered with screws that stand for the hedgehog’s prickles. Simple, but fascinating.

Its author, Konstantin Skretutski, was inspired by the Monument to the Borders’ Protectors located nearby, which is one of the most ridiculous Kyiv statues. Roots of this inspiration lie in the animated movie: that hedgehog saw a beautiful horse on his way to his friend, a bear, with whom they would drink tea and count stars every night. He was charmed by that horse and worried about it there in the fog. And this poor little creature sees the Borders’ Protector’s horse, with its awkward proportions and raised tail, every day. No wonder he looks so surprised!

There is one more interesting thing about this sculpture. The sign on it says “The Little Horse”. Try to guess if the hedgehog is calling that white horse, or if he can’t help whispering in surprise seeing the Protector’s horse, or if it is actually the monument to a horse, or maybe the hedgehog is imagining he’s riding a horse..

It is merely impossible to stay indifferent or non-smiling when you see this little sculpture. Don’t miss it.
