“Nice Restaurant with good food & service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

It was nice to have good service for a change as well as good food. They also have a great selection of Czech beer. There are also some good vegetarian options available. Don't miss the goulash.

“Improved version or Hromoy Pol!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

It`s one restaurant chain - U Hromogo Pola and Staromacek! But Staromac have four saloons two (smoke and non-smoke) on ground floor, smoke saloon - on first floor and VIP saloon!
A young chef can offer his own version of chech cuisine!
I`m going there every week for a meal with fresh tap beer!

“Utter disaster”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2011

and it breaks my heart to say this because I'm Czech.

Service is absolutely disastrous, just like most establishments in Kiev, if not worse. Four people serving about the same number of guests, yet nobody takes your plates away, asks whether you want another beer or gets the food in on time. Main took 50 minutes to arrive. They counted 3 beers on my bill instead of two I've had.

Starter of toast with toppings (Devils toast/Dabelska topinka) was soggy. Main of duck with stuffing, dumplings and red cabbage took long time to arrive - duck was extra chewy and dry, dumplings good, cabbage very dry, stuffing nowhere to be seend . Even though the taste overall was ok, as a meal it was pretty much inedible.

Serving cut beer (half light/half dark) split like B52 with light at the bottom and dark at the top was a novelty and a new low. I've never seen it done that way anywhere in Czech, asking for something to mix it with was a mission as they didn't understand why I'd want to do this.

Btw. no english, no czech (though no problem as I get by ok in the local lingo).

The only positive was authentic Czech radio being played.

Visit Prague instead.

“Pretty authentic Czech food in a fun atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2011

This Czech restaurant--pronounced "Staromak"--is a great option for pretty authentic Czech food. They have all the Czech favorites--schnitzel, svichkova, pork knuckle, and of course, good Czech beer (Krusovice). They play Czech radio and have lots of "Czech" decorations throughout (including photos of Karel Gott). You can actually order a "meter of beer" to serve to yourself and your friends at your table. They also have a lunch specials menu that is a bit cheaper than the full dinner menu.

The only drawback here is the service is hit or miss--sometimes you get the dish you ordered, sometimes you don't. Sometimes the meals come right away, sometimes it takes an hour. Sometimes they bring the bill when you ask, sometimes they don't. But they do try. Overall, it's worth the risk--the food and atmosphere outweigh the spotty service.
