Here is what restaurant critics over the years will be called "Ukrainian cuisine of the Soviet period," and the mere process of reading the menu is wild appetite. Salad leaves traditional herring under a fur coat, Olivier, Mimosa Capital, salad with beans and a dozen names. Then begins an even more pleasant discoveries. Take, for example, herring with anchovies on potatoes with onions or perch with mushrooms, fried pancakes. Sated fangled delights metropolitan restaurants audience inevitably return to the simple joys that are certain to become trump card Spotykach.

“Good, if you are looking for Soviet-era impressions”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

The restaurant is located next to the Andriyivsky Uzviz.
It's a member of the Kozyrna Karta chain, so don't forget to ask for a discount with your card.

THE reason to come here is to get a glimpse of what a typical soviet interior used to look like.
Being a native Ukrainian myself, I was a bit surprised to see the attention to detail and some of the ironic elements in restaurant's design.

The food is good. Not breathtakingly special, but quite good.
It has the right mix of Ukrainian and European cuisine.

“Yummy and the Cold War Era”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

This restaurant conveniently situated in the center of Kiev was our joint of choice during a layover in the capital of Ukraine before a flight to our final destination – Tel Aviv. Porsches and Audis parked in front of Spotykach as well as welcome shots of spotykach (sweet local liquor that gave its name to the restaurant) served by a fancy dressed waiter got us think we had not entered the most inexpensive place in Kiev. Later the bill proved our guess had been true. But I swear, both the great Ukrainian food and the atmosphere of Soviet era of late 60-ties made every hryvna paid worth it.

It was far not the first time when I had borsht (beetroot soup), draniki (grated and then fried potatoes with mushrooms) and toasts with garlic but it was probably the first time I enjoyed them all so greatly.

All in all, I believe this is the perfect place for taking a break during a tour around Kiev to pamper your guts and catch a glimpse of the USSR of the Cold War era.

“good place, but food not "wow"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

The restaurant is in a cellar and is decorated with items from the 60s and 70s to create a Soviet-style ambience. Service is quick and friendly, cuisine is unimaginative Ukrainian. Zakuski -- forshmack, salo, pickles, local sausage, herring were what you get everywhere else, borsch was good, vareniki with potatoes -- mediocre, as were vareniki with cherries. Khrenovukha was ok.
The day before we went to Shekavica on recommendations of our Ukrainian partners, and all felt that Shekavica was a level above Spotykach -- the food was better quality and the place was cheerier without this feel of Soviet simplicity in food and spirit. If you want something fancy, similar to Pushkin in Moscow, go to Lipsky, if you want to try authentic Ukrainian go to Shekavica (reminded me of Shinok in Moscow, but food was less greasy), and if you want to get a kick of Soviet-style stuff, Spotykach is the place for you.

“Awesome place, not the best food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

This place is very nice, the furnishings is special, the staff is friendly. But when you order on the menu, what you get is never what you excepted. I had better borsh, better steaks ecc. in same level restaurant.

“Unforgettable atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

I visited this restaurant with my husband and a colleague sometime in April of 2010. We found it by chance, since we knew no one in the city to recommend us places to go. But what a surprise! This almost sub-terranean restaurant takes you back in time, during the soviet regime era. The decoration is colourful and elegant with a touch of soviet nostalgia. The staff is always polite, fast and greets you with the warmest smile. The food was extremely tasty and with a great variety (though we couldn´t read the menu and they couldn´t explain it to us in english!). The music would make you relax and enjoy every minute that you spent in this place. I would go there again and again!
