“Interesting for the Curious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

If you want to enjoy some really architecturally fascinating buildings, you should go there NOT at the weekend ;) This Square is considered to be a promenade place for all tourists and inhabitants of our own small towns and big cities. Hence a herd of people every evening and at the weekend ;) You should look around attentively as there are a lot of true masterpieces of architecture, so keep your eyes open! ;)

“A bit eccentric architechture, too noisy and crowdy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Not the best place to visit in Kiev. Too noisy, too many overpriced shops. If you do find yourself here, better take a street up just right of the Music school (big building with marble columns in front) to find yourself in absolute calm after some 200 m, and see a beautiful and awsome castle-building on top of the hill - the notorious "House of Chimaeras" built by eccentric architect Vladislav Gorodetsky (the stree actually bears his name) in early 1900s. it's definitely worth seeng and taking pictures of.

“Major meeting point, promenade area and the skateboarder paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Conclusion: The square is a “must see” town's center place.
Cons: Built in a Soviet day, square is a bit "claustrophobic" surrounded by 4-6 story buildings on all sides with a little open space. It was rebuilt – an old Soviet monument removed - in the early-2000 in a bit "kitsch" style of the time.
Pros: But that post-Soviet "facelift" made the square more modern and "user friendly: it's one of skateboarders' favorite places in evening, all big admittance-free shows are staged there also, e.g. Elton John and The Queen (a rock band) shows in 2012. The square used to be a backdrop to a huge Soviet monument at the foot of the hill and the hotel "Moscow" right above. The hotel was renamed to "Kyiv", the square re-built and now the underground "Globe" shopping mall - also build in early 2000 – sells many luxury brands. The second "installment" of the mall replaced that Soviet monument and features a huge glass wall overlooking the square and the "pillar "Mother Ukraine" (dubbed by the locals "Halya"). The square and the surrounding buildings are highlighted at night providing that romantic feel. A flower clock on a lawn at the side of the Mother Ukraine monument is another town's attraction.
Useful tip: buy your lunch in the underground food court of the Globe shopping mall and enjoy the sun outside.
