“A short stay in Bucharest spent in seeking taxi!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

Being a constant client Marriot when visiting Bucharest, tried another hotel this time. Good location, quite a good room (spacy, clean and with a large bed, so meet my request made at booking, which was pleasant). I would not say that the room equipment was old, probably there renovated and not renovated rooms, but the only problem I faced with was the air-conditioner that could not be switched off (it was confirmed by my colleague, who also had problems with it) it was not noisy, but it was cold in the room. The breakfast is very usual, nothing outstanding. Coffee could be better:)
The only problem that we faced with in Bucharest ( I have not noticed it previously) was taxi. If you need one to go, please ask for the car well in advance. Probably it was due to the storm that was those days in Bucharest, probably not, but it was really a quest to find a taxi!
Next time I would probably stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: Stayed at 18th floor- problems with airconditioner.

I'm Gold Ambasador of InterContinental, but this is the worst Inter, in which I've been. Firstly they had a problem with our resrvation, women couldn't have found our 4th room. Secondly i didn't have upgrade (my colege had, but room was the same!). The entance to lounge was paid by Gold Ambasador, as well!! Only service in the restaurant an bar was good. Very poor brekfast. Very old equipment in relax area, very bad quality water in swimming pool, old sauna etc. Medium quality masage. Bad, old equipment in the room. Air condition was so noisy tha i couldn't slept! I will try another InterContinental hotels, but definitaly not this.

This is an excellent hotel in central Bucharest. All staff were very helpful and I was happy with the food. There is a metro stop 2 minutes from the hotel and the old city is within walking distance.
Three minor observations:
1. There was no folder with information about the hotel facilities in the room
2. The in-room internet charge is 16 euro for 24 hours but I was not charged for it even though I used it.
3. There was only one tea bag in the room and this was not replaced after I used it the first day.
Some tips about Taxis:
1. From the airport to the hotel.
Change money in one of the many ATMs just outside the arrivals hall. The screens do not respond to touch so you need to push the buttons at the side next to the questions. Once you realize this they are simple to use and instructions are available in many languages!
Next Go to one of the bright yellow machines with the word TAXI on top. They are really ultra simple to use. Touch the flag for the language you want to use and next choose a taxi company. Cristaxi was fine and is the cheapest at 1.39 lei/km. You have a choice of other more expensive companies but they did not appear to offer any advantages and the taxis looked the same. The machine immediately issues a printout with the number of the taxi and the time it will arrive outside. It really is incredibly simple - having never seen the machine to actually having the receipt for my ordered taxi was less than 30 seconds. My receipt in English said 8 minutes for arrival of the taxi but was there in less than 5 minutes. All the taxis are in a large car park just outside the airport building and get dispatched individually when requested. The cost to the hotel was 28 Lei which is pretty cheap (under 6 UK pounds for a 20-30 min ride).
2. From the hotel to the airport: Although there are taxis waiting on the street outside the hotel, the receptionist advised that you ask them to order you one because you then have the details of the taxi coming. The arrangements are the same as at the airport ie you are given a receipt with the number of the taxi and how long it will take to arrive. It was 2 minutes for me.

Another point to remember. You can not take Lei out of the country and you can only use them in the food court at the airport. You can of course change them back to Euro or another currency at an exchange desk at the airport (but not outside the country).
A rather odd thing happens if you choose to pay with Lei at the duty free. You first go to the girl who changes the Lei to Euro after checking your passport and asking you to sign a form twice. You then go to the girl next to her and pay for your purchase with the Euro. The inefficiency of the system will put a smile on your face.
The airport is excellent. Modern, comfortable, ultra clean and with free WIFI.

Again in Bucharest after a few years, I stayed at the Intercontinental again, for two nights at the end of September. I called them about a week before leaving, to request the same room I had during my previous stay and, sure enough, room # 1807 was mine upon arrival! There are quite a few nice hotels in Bucharest, some of them newer than the Intercontinental, but none of them would offer the views the Intercontinental does. Try to get a room facing the University Square and you will be richly rewarded with beautiful views of the city, both in daytime and at night. Further on, the National Theater is just next to the hotel and so is access to the subway and you're within walking distance from the National Museum, the Chishmijiu Park, good restaurants and cafes and the charming old side of the city, the Shelari/Lipscani area, which seems to come alive mostly in the evening when the countless small restaurants seem to be full and the fun continues until the small hours of the morning.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a higher floor and facing the University Square

We had, admittedly, been travelling around Northern Romania, which could not be expected to offer hotels in the same league as those in the capital city. However, the Intercontinental immediately impressed us as top class. It is spaciously situated in a central position, beside a 6 lane street highway, with a metro station close by. The windows - of our room on the 19th floor - were sufficiently glazed to keep out all but the fiercest street noises - e.g. a mass protest, in the street below, against cyanide being used in gold-mining, which sought to make its point through the level of noise created. The internal swimming-pool and fitness centre (we had no time to do other than inspect either) were most attractively situated on the highest accessible floor and had access to an outside terrace with sun-beds. Our bedroom was entirely satisfactory, apart from the unusual narrowness of the bath. We had no occasion to dine in the hotel but the breakfast was excellent and 'served' in a bright room with large windows and a most appealingly designed lay-out. The staff were unfailingly helpful. We much enjoyed out stay.

Quite why it takes a trip to Romania to find a decent hotel is beyond me.
Check-in was swift. The room was simple, pleasant and in excellent shape.
Staff were courteous and it felt genuinely so.
Food was very good. Gym nicely placed with a beautiful view of the city.
Right next to the underground. A direct bus from the airport takes you to the hotel.
There is a trolleybus outside that also takes you to the national stadium.
The 'Ceausescu Palace' was a short walk away and the old town an even shorter distance.
A good place to relax, everything in excellent working order and even a balcony included.
The only negative I can think of is that smoking was allowed inside the building - however, this is found everywhere in Bucharest (even the nicest cafe).
Top class all round.

Room Tip: As far as I can see all rooms have decent views of the city
