My husband and I booked a Valentine's weekend away in Bucharest and were excited when we came across the Hilton January Sale which included this hotel. Even though Bucharest itself is pretty cheap, upscale hotels were rather pricey. So we were happy to get a good deal at a branded hotel where we knew what we would be getting.
I had read about how the hotel was a historic building and really nicely done and I would agree with that. It's got a really good location and central to seeing the sites, but also overlooks a clean square (well it's kinda a parking lot now, but still).
Usually we stay at Starwoods, but there is not a Starwood in Bucharest and I hadn't stayed in a Hilton for a while, but I knew it would at least be up to a certain standard. While it was, I was definitely a bit disappointed. The room was fine, but nothing impressive, just a boring, business room. The TV was small and not a flat-screen and the bathroom was just a typcial bathroom. With Starwoods you usually get a bit more design, even with a business-style Sheraton.
The staff was very curtious and helpful, especially the concierge. We wanted to go out to Dracula's castle and he arranged everything for us. There is also a rental car place in the hotel so we checked out those rates but we had a private tour with a driver and a guide for about 200€ Definitely not cheap but it was a 12-hour tour and it would have been almost that much for us to drive ourselves. The tour was excellent and booked through Jolly Tours which is part of the hotel. Lucia was our guide and she was just fantastic. So knowledgeable and energetic.
The breakfast was good, lots of choices and everything was fairly fresh. Breakfast was included in our stay which really makes a difference as you're full for most of the day.
Overall our stay was very pleasant and the building itself was nice, but I wasn't overly impressed with the room and I feel like we do get better service and extras at Starwoods since we're Starwood preferred guests (although we are Hilton members too). I hate to base my experience off of this one stay, but I think I'd choose to stay at a Starwood versus a Hilton. We always get a room upgrade and in general the rooms just make you feel like you're 'away' a bit more and aren't so cookie-cutter. But I should not disregard the time we had and that it was a solid 4-star hotel experience.
