“Want to feel like royalty?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2014

If you want to feel like royalty then it's a good place to stay! This certainly isn't a cheap place but in fact for what you get it's quite reasonable. I stayed here with my husband and mother and we had a deluxe room with balcony, we stayed six nights. We had the main double bed and additional sofa bed at the end of the room. It was difficult to find a hotel in Zagreb with a balcony. In the end I had three of them facing the front of the building.

The place looks like a palace and you feel like a queen. Our room was large for three people and we had a bath with shower and a separate shower and two basins. Additionally we had a toilet and basin as well. Each side of the room had it's own drawers and wardrobes, ample space.

Breakfast was included and was magnificent, you can eat from the buffet and choices endless or order from the menu. Breakfast can be had inside or outside and as with most of Croatia for smokers you will find ashtrays outside.

Doors are opened endlessly for you. When we got there quite early we only waited an hour for our room to be ready which was way before check in time. We had tea/coffee in the bar and more pricey than local coffee shops.

We didn't eat at the restaurants but we watched the World Cup in the bar which was great.

Wifi is free and works very well, I have stayed in other hotels where the free wifi drops out when you aren't using it and you have to log in each time, this stays logged on.

I've seen some reviews not so positive but I couldn't have been happier. Thanks esplanade had a great stay and don't change - you are special.

A beautiful old fashioned hotel, suite was excellent with a fabulous bathroom. Staff very good especially in the Bistro Bar, the young waiter there gave us some great tips about the city. You are about a 5 minute walk from the restaurants and bars

Room Tip: Book a suite if you can but good views from most rooms

This hotel is conveniently located in the square outside the train station, and a 10 minute walk from the centre of town.

The service and accommodation were excellent and what you would expect from a 5* hotel. The room was large and the bed was extremely comfortable. We had a large bathroom with slippers and comfortable towels.

The air-conditioning wasn't very reliable and when we were in reception I heard another guest complaining about the same thing. We therefore chose to sleep with the window open which made it a bit noisy due to its proximity to the station.

We got our room when it was on offer, and did not eat or drink in the hotel due to the extortionate prices (24 euros per person for breakfast!) so cannot comment on those aspects.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a comfortable night's sleep before or after a long train journey.

We spent a wonderful night in Zagreb which was made perfect by this hotel. It is well located near the beautiful city centre and the station. The staff are all so lovely- smiley and helpful. When we checked in (having only booked the night before on the spur of the moment) the lady seemed to anticipate all our questions and gave good advice/reccommendations. The valet parking is a convenient service. Housekeeping were friendly and prompt when we asked for our extra bed to be set up. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful and exudes elegance. The breakfast selection was great- love the eggs Benedict! The gym is well equipped, however I would not reccommend going down there at night- I did and was the only one there- obviously no staff work down there at night. It was a little creepy being down there alone. The room itself was nice, especially the elegant bathroom (although our view out the bedroom window wasn't that great). Maybe a complimenary bottle of water would have been nice after our long journey. Overall a great hotel with lots of character.

Near the station, this landmark hotel ticks all the boxes for a hotel of this level. Comfortable room and helpful staff. Nice bathroom with lots of fluffy towels, although the bath and shower were not amazing. The bar and restaurant areas are pretty formal and stuffy, but pretty commensurate with the kind of place it is. We ordered breakfast in our room and it was great: fresh fruit, coffee and pastries. It's worth noting that breakfast is not usually included in the room rate.

The Esplanade is a grand old hotel, impressive lobby and large rooms. We had a room on the first floor which faced the main street but as the trams run 24 hours it was very noisy during the night. We were moved to an "inward" room which despite having no view of the city was twice the size with a huge bathroom and was very quiet. We did not try the breakfast 24 Euros p.p, but did have some food and drinks in the bar which were very nice. Staff were friendly and professional. Rated as the "best" hotel in Croatia, its not like a 5* you would find in cities like New York or London so do not expect all mod cons. The price in the summer is very reasonable due to many people heading to the coast.

To reach from the airport, take the airport bus (30 kuna) to main station. From there a tram (no. 2 or 6) for 4 stops (10 kuna) will leave you almost at the door of the hotel. The location is about 10-15 mins walk to Lower Town and 20 mins walk to Upper Town. Zagreb is a great city to visit and you should allow 2-3 days to check it out. Take CASH, most places do not accept credit cards.

We stayed here for one night as a stop-off on the long drive back from Dubrovnik to the UK. On arrival we were met by the doorman who took care of our car and parked it in the hotel garage. The hotel is traditional, possibly showing its age in areas, but comfortable and the service is top class. The restaurant is also very good and the service again was very good. Its location close to the heart of the city means its a good base to see the sights. Overall we thought the Esplanade was the perfect place to stay and offered very good value.
