“Not good choice”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

OMG, I had a nightmare with the hairdryer which was taped with scotch tape, and I realized it after I washed my hair.
The whole bathroom was wet ; something was leaking all over the floor. Bathroom was really disaster, everything I touch fall apart.
Location is perfect, the centar is close, and you can walk all around the centar.

Room Tip: check the bathroom first

This hotel was very nice with a great Bulgarian breakfast included and very well located. A few short blocks to the left on Stamboliyski Blvd is the "Sofia Mall" with lots of shops and a small food court on the top level where the cinemas are.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

I stayed here for four nights in August 2012. I have stayed in (literally) hundreds of hotels, and I would stay here again without question. Great value, 35-45 euro per night, air conditioning, modern rooms (if a little small). Ask for front facing with balcony, don't worry about tram noise- good double glazing. Breakfast is not great though, but a quick walk down to Vitosha Boulevard will provide plenty of choice. Really good location, walking distance to the best clubs, restaurants, sites and bars. Really friendly helpful girls on reception too.

Room Tip: Floor 3+ front facing

The hotel is handsome, comfortable, and well-equipped for tourists. The location is convenient to the historical and tourist areas, and the tram runs close to the hotel. I would have been quite content were it not for an odd incident. The a/c in my hotel room would not work, so (details, details, one hour later) I finally was moved to a vacant room with a/c across the hall. The young man on duty then asked if I would like anything else, perhaps some company for the night and then added, "some girls...or something." I suspect he was trying to be accommodating and probably had had requests from other middle-aged male tourists, but this really threw me. Still, I slept well and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast the next morning.

Room Tip: Make sure that your a/c works before you settle into the room.

We recently stayed at the Renaissance Hotel in Sofia Bulgaria as part of a group tour. The rooms are basic but clean. We had a balcony overlooking the main street and street noise is definitely a problem at this hotel. The tram passes both directly in front of the hotel and a second tram passes on a nearby perpendicular street. The breakfast was OK. The beds are OK. The hotel itself is a pink building. It is easy walking distance from many of the sights of Sofia and in the opposite direction is one of Sofia's malls. The location is very good.

I would say this is a tradeoff between extra comfort and location, but for two nights before joining at the group hotel and for one night at the end of our tour, we stayed at a nearby hotel equally convenient but located on a quiet street. The Renaissance provided better views and was approximately 10 Euros cheaper than the other hotel. But, the other hotel offered a more spacious room on a quiet street with a more updated furnished room and more comfortable bed. The bathroom at the other hotel was much more updated and had a rain shower head. The breakfast at the other hotel was significantly better and the service at the other hotel was significantly better.

So - I would say that the Renaissance is an acceptable hotel in Sofia's central district, but obviously we chose to upgrade for 10 euros additional per night to get a quieter location with equally good access to the sights and a significantly upgraded room.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street and on a high floor. You may not get the views but you may get...

Although this is only a three star budget hotel, the location could not be any better.
It is situated right in the centre of Sofia and within walking distance of all the main shops and centres.
The staff I have found to be very helpful and most of them speak relatively good English.
It is a very tall narrow hotel. I have run meetings there on a couple of occasions and the main conference room is right at the top, on the seventh floor.
Giving great views over the city.
The breakfast in the downstairs restaurant is a little bit Limited, and especially as I am a vegetarian they don't really cater for that very well at all.
However this is something I have got used to.
The price is incredibly good for a city centre hotel in a European capital. I think we paid something like €45
per night and that was for single occupancy in a large spacious double room including breakfast.

Room Tip: The higher floor you are on the quieter it is and the better of views

The rooms are clean and if you get one with a balcony you have a splendid view over the city. The location of the hotel is great you are just a short walk away from the centre of the city..
On the down side the staff did not seem very friendly and came across a bit suspicious of me, it may have been partly my fault due to me walking around in shorts when it was chilly and wet. I thought it was a bit pricey for what we got and the dining room was supposed to be chintzy and retro but gave me a distinct feeling of eating my breakfast in a 1970;s disco. Upside i loved the pink exterior.
