“Largest synagogue in the eastern Balkans”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

One of the most beautifull synagogue in that region of the world. During 2nd worlwar it was left untouched, unlike all other synagogues around the Balkans. It remains in its original state, as it was built in the 19th century, when the country had a huge Jewish Community. The synagogue is still in use, and is one of the few remaining in the Balkans (exception of Bucarest and Belgrade, which are not as well conserved or original as this one)

“Largest Sephardic Synagogue in Europe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

This is a lovely synagogue with a central chandelier that is beyond magnificent. The entry to the synagogue is through an iron gate along the side of the synagogue. It is located in a beautiful setting and is wonderfully situated near the mosque. This is an area of Sofia in which one can see a confluence of religious practice and in fact this is an area called the "Square of Tolerance." Ask to go upstairs to get a bird's eye view of the interior of the temple. Lovely.

“Synagogue of Sofia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

One can visit the Synagogue paying a ticket of 2 bulgarian leva (1 euro). The guard gave as a leaflet whit the history of the place -in english. The synagogue is not a very impressive one, but in any case it is a nice place to visit. There are a lot of windows with colored glasses that filter the light and give the place a bright and light feeling -unlike the huge dark catholic churches. Although it is old and somewhat neglected it is decorated with bright colors. For a better view of the synagogue you have to climb the stairs to the ladies' area.

“Impressive building, beautifully restored”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

One of Sofia's hidden gems and absolutely worth a visit. Incredibly helpful security person on the gate who is very happy to give a potted history of the Jewish community in Bulgaria and of the synagogue itself. A delightful place. Entrance fee for tourists is BGN2, but there is a box for donations on the right hand side as you enter the synagogue.
