We stayed four nights here and were impressed by the building and the service. The hotel is beautifully decorated. The room was spacious and quiet, with everything you need (there were even condoms in a bedside drawer!). There was also a well-written guide about Sofia and its attractions. It is free for guests.
Like most other five star hotels, the bed linen is changed every day. As a part of the care policy about the environment, there is an option to leave a little green card on the bed which means that it doesn’t need to be changed that day. The bed itself was very comfortable with good quality linen. The wifi was free and pretty fast.
There is no other hotel in Sofia with such a great location. Many attractions such as the St George Rotunda, St Nedelya Church, Alexander Nevski cathedral and the Ivan Vazov National Theatre are just minutes away. Moreover, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes around.
The place where the hotel stands today has its own story. This is where the old city library stood. It was also where the first council of Sofia operated. Because the building was of historical significance there was a great deal of controversy about its fate. Sadly it was finally decided to destroy it (about 20 years ago) to make way for a new business building.
When in Bulgaria, there is no better breakfast than the traditional Bulgarian one – banitsa (pastry) with boza (malt drink). The finest one you can find is just a minute walk from the hotel – at the corner of the streets of Graf Ignatiev and Knyaz Alexander I. That is why we preferred to miss the breakfast at the hotel.
The lobby bar is a nice place to have a drink and chat with friends. With paintings everywhere (most of them for sale), the bar looks like an art gallery. We’ve been here a few times before and enjoyed it. There was only one disappointment. We were with friends one night and ordered some beer, wine and tea. After we had been served, we were completely forgotten by the waitress who didn’t come to see us and check whether everything was fine. It was after 11 pm and the bar was almost empty. One of my friends wanted to order more wine and tried to get the attention of the waitress a few times but without success. When the waitress finally turned up my friend told her that he was not impressed by the service. She did not say anything, not even a simple ‘sorry’. She looked bored and tired, which might have been understandable, but I would expect better service in a five star hotel. That was the only downside of my experience at the hotel.
Otherwise, the reception staff was helpful and friendly. The spa facilities look excellent as well as the prices reasonable. I was very pleased with my back massage.
I would definitely come back.
