“Grand hotel with fussy decor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2011

Many people will like the style of the Grand Hotel Sofia -- a kind of late-20th-century imitation of a late-19th-century grand hotel. The decor is dark wood and fussy detailed ornament that tries hard to connote luxury but never manages to achieve the elegance of the archetype. When I visit a friend at the four-star Central Park Hotel Sofia, I find its clean modern decor, simple but stylish, more pleasant and welcoming than that of the five-star Grand Hotel Sofia. But those whose tastes differ from mine may find what they like at the Grand Hotel Sofia.

My "executive room" is very large, and there's a lot of unused space in the middle that just adds walking time between point A and point B. Furnishings include a sofa, two arm chairs, and a large coffee table; a desk with a lamp and a chair that's slightly too low for comfortable laptop use; lots of cupboard space and drawers; and a minibar. All the lighting, both wall sconces and ceiling lights, is distributed unevenly around the periphery of the room, leaving a patch of gloom in the middle of the room, and another one at the edge where the suitcase stand is. The latter is severe enough that when I'm packing, I have to move my suitcase to the sofa so that I have sufficient light. The large flat-screen TV faces the bed but is so far away that it needs to be even larger. It cannot be watched from the sofa or armchairs. The internet connection works well.

The large bathroom is pleasant, well-equipped, and well-lit, with both a shower and oversized tub, and plenty of space to lay out toiletries. A wide range of amenities is supplied.

The breakfast buffet is truly grand -- a very broad selection, elegantly presented. A highlight is a honeycomb that sits in a frame, dripping honey that can be spooned up. The waiters are attentive.

The front desk staff and bellhops are friendly and helpful. The floor mats in the elevators are changed every day to tell you what day of the week it is.

I liked so much. The room was very large and luxurious, the bathroom also, in glorious marble with top notch faucets, shower stall, large bath tub, bidet and ample counter space around the sink. The location is perfect, in the city Center. Breakfast was ok.

I was in Sofia in the mid of July and the Grand Hotel is a luxurious five stars hotel for business and pleasure. It has a good location in the downtown, near the very few attractions of Sofia.

The rooms are quite huge, very comfortable and like in others worthy hotels I stayed in they even offer you slippers. The staff is nice and always helpful. Breakfast is ok, but they should diversify the bread offer for the breakfast; sometimes they were out of bread specialties and pastries; that’s unusual for 5 stars!! In exchange, they had an interesting idea to offer honey comb at the breakfast. The hotel restaurant has a very good cuisine with international menu.

It’s a hotel with very good services which I can always recommend and come back with pleasure.

Excellent location, next to all important buildings in Sofia or next to the main sightseeing objectives, very close to the subway and to many restaurants. Very clean, with polite and helpful staff. Rooms are very spacious, clean and comfortable, with all amenities. When wifi signal was not sufficient I got an router to improve quality. WiFi was free. Breakfast is among the best I had in this cathegory. Business facilities are great. One funny thing: in all the elevators they change carpet every day, having added to the word welcome the nano of the respective day of the week. Minus the fact that on room service its to be payed some extra fee added to the price of the purchased merchandise.

As many others have noted in their reviews, the rooms are quite spacious albeit spartan in their appointment. Nevertheless, the room was comfortable and met all my needs. The seating in the room would allow me the opportunity to conduct a small business meeting if I wanted to without having to book a specific meeting room.

Breakfast was included in my room rate and was just right for me. Not too much choice, yet not too little. I find myself paralyzed with too many options at the buffet, so this was good. Although there seemed to be several wait staff there, it was hard to come by a cup of coffee. Instead of immediately welcoming you at the table they seemed to stand by waiting for a signal to come over. Management may want to address this with the breakfast wait staff.

The hotel is centrally located close to several monuments and a flea market that operates in a park near the orthodox church. Also nearby is Happy Sushi, which is quite good for a sushi place in the middle of Bulgaria.

The hotel is nice but the prices were too high. I was arriving late at night and stopped over there.
There was too much police around the place. kind of creepy.

You can't really go wrong with the Grand Hotel. It is as described by many recent reviewers, and my ratings are high overall. Love the free in-room ethernet internet access, and free wifi access all over. I thought breakfast was quite good, with made to order eggs, lots of fruit, good cold fruit yogurt (which you don't always see), and decent coffee. I just wish the waiters would walk around more and refill your coffee cup without having to be asked. The downstairs bar serves great drinks at reasonable prices, and with a smile. All service was excellent, and English is really strong here.

What can be improved? I don't love the beds (a bit on the hard side) or pillows; make sure the shower doors close completely (mine didn't but I chose not to complain); change the bathroom hair dryers (they are exceptionally weak); and add more cardio equipment including ellyptical trainer to the fitness room. Plus the changing areas and overall size of the fitness room is quite tight.

Having said all, I highly recommend this hotel to other visitors, as probably the best option, if not top 3 best options, in Sofia. It is quiet. Staff is great. Food is very good.
