Lavanda is the best restaurant we have been to in Sofia. The menu is interesting, and even if there are problems with balance in some of the starters (the foie gras was over-powered by the sweetness of the accompanying sauce), the main courses were magnificent!
Do try the pork cutlets or the ribs from the winter menu - perfectly cooked. My only suggestion would be that instead of a fixed single vegetable with each meat, they should provide a recommendation and a choice that allows each diner to select their preferred vegetables. For example, my braised red cabbage was delicious, but the whole dish was improved when we swapped a part of my cabbage for the herb potato mash that accompanied Juliana's choice of ribs. But these are details, I cannot emphasise enough how delighted I was to eat meat that was cooked so well.
The wine list is short and varied. Our first choice wine was unavailable, but the waitress suggested a good alternative that worked well with the meal. On the subject of service, Lavanda is among the best I have experienced anywhere, let alone Sofia. Polite, careful and cheerful.
Finding the restaurant can be a bit of an issue. Basically, you go into the garden of the bar "One More" at 12 Ivan Shishman, but instead of entering the ground floor, you walk down the left hand side of the building and go through the back door, up the stairs (past the candles on the stone steps) and in through the glass door on the second floor.
The interior is well designed, three rooms and an open kitchen in a fourth, with interesting ornaments and lamps hanging from the ceiling. Attention to detail with things like the cutlery.
Enjoy, it is worth a visit!
