Owner description: The Museum of Socialist Art (MSA) opened on September 19th 2011 as part of the structure of the National Museum of Bulgarian Art and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The museum consists of a sculptural park (7,500 square metres), where 80 works of monumental sculpture are exhibited at present; and an exhibition hall (550 square metres), designed for works of easel art. There is also a video hall, where archival and documentary films related to the socialist era are projected. The souvenir shop offers authentic items, books and postcards as well as contemporary items. The sculptural area will be supplemented and enriched, while the expositions in the interior part will be periodically updated. Thereby, it will be possible to show different perspectives and diverse curatorial interpretations of the Socialist period in Bulgarian fine arts.

“Impressive sculpture garden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2014

A gem of a museum in a hard to find location. Take the metro (Line 1) to GM Dimitrov station. You'll see the Sopharma Business Towers across the main road. Walk down to the traffic lights, cross the street and walk down ul Lazechar Stanchev keeping the towers on your right. It's through a small, security gate which is also the entrance to the Ministry of Discrimination!! You'll see the red star ahead. Ticket office on the left near the red star.
The socialist sculptures are the real highlight, brought from all over Bulgaria. Lots of Lenins, a few Dimitrovs, and several bronze workers (factory & farm).
There is a tiny cinema showing the highs & lows of post-war Bulgaria under communism.
There is a temporary exhibition space upstairs. Also a small shop & a cafe with limited choice.

“Interesting thing to do”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

The museum of socialist art was a very interesting afternoon activity. Make sure you leave enough time, we were lucky to have a great lady give some extra information as we walked around, but I think even if you don't luck-out with an ad-hoc tour guide, its a fascinating place to visit. Highly recommended.

“Truly a historical must see.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2014

The m site though a bit hard to get to I truly a must. This place is a photographers paradise and if you can convert your pictures into sepia and/or black and white, you will have endless memories of a bygone era important to Bulgaria's past. This museum complex bests anything I've ever seen in both Moscow and Hanoi. Make sure to see the video.

“A harrowing visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2014

Perhaps calling this a museum is a bit far-reaching. There are no guides or tours or films to put things in context, but a lot of the holdings speak for themselves. There is a large yard with a collection of rather stunning sculptures from the Soviet-era, including a number of Lenin. The inside exhibit was very small but also impressive: a series of propaganda posters from the Soviet states and from China.

The place was kind of difficult to find, but if you can get there, you will see a small but impressive collection. Moreover, I do not think there are many places where you can see these things this well preserved and all in one place.
