Owner description: The Museum of Socialist Art (MSA) opened on September 19th 2011 as part of the structure of the National Museum of Bulgarian Art and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The museum consists of a sculptural park (7,500 square metres), where 80 works of monumental sculpture are exhibited at present; and an exhibition hall (550 square metres), designed for works of easel art. There is also a video hall, where archival and documentary films related to the socialist era are projected. The souvenir shop offers authentic items, books and postcards as well as contemporary items. The sculptural area will be supplemented and enriched, while the expositions in the interior part will be periodically updated. Thereby, it will be possible to show different perspectives and diverse curatorial interpretations of the Socialist period in Bulgarian fine arts.

“Very cool, bring a map with you”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

This museum is worth the journey from downtown Sofia. You can reach it by metro which is cheap and fairly easy to use. The entrance is not that obvious, so bring a map with you in case you have difficulty. There is an interesting film, a cool poster and art exhibit, and the fantastic sculpture garden. There are some geocaches nearby if you are into that sort of thing :)

“Wonderful place for any history buff ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

but not just for those - anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of socialist art and the way it mixed propaganda and aesthetics. Some of the artists represented are among the most famous Bulgarian painters and they simply had to keep on the government's good side and not end up in forced labor camps. Love the collection of international posters as well. Oh, and the gift shop is super awesome!

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2013

This place is a little hard to find. It's down a side street and we couldn't find any signs to it. Even when you get to the entrance you wouldn't know it was the museum if it wasn't for the big red star in the back yard. The garden with its sculptures was great, and the poster exhibition interesting (not much English in there though). A nice place to visit amongst the other sights of Sofia.

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

We found this really interesting and a different experience. It was a bit difficult to find and we really should have checked the location before we went because using public transport we couldn't find it, however using the map from the tourist information we found it easily.
