“An Indian Bulgarian or a Bulgarian Indian restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

Entering the restaurant says it all: the decor is a normal Bulgarian restaurant decor (including television on the wall) with some Indian accents (table linen, a few decorative items). So is the food: it is beyond doubt Indian inspired but it misses the final touch: I had shrimp soup with only a few small bits of shrimp, and the soup misses consistency, and Madras curry chicken: the chicken was shortly cooked to keep it tender, as many Bulgarians do and not the Indian chicken that is well drenched in the sauce. The rice that came with it was rather tasteless with some deep frozen vegetables. There are better Indian restaurants in Sofia.

“Wah! Kya Swaad hain!!! (Wow! What taste!!!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

In India, Athithi Devo Bhavah means the guest is equal to God. Saffron Restaurant, its staff and the food they served, took the example of this statement and served a team of hungry cricketers from Romania a feast that is worthy of every leva we spent there!
To be hones, it's been ages since I have experienced such delightful feast. It's just not one dish alone, but the entire fare was just brilliant.
To top it the owner Mr.Prakash ably supported by his staff including vali (hope I got her name right??! since we were busy adding calories) made our experience an unforgettable one in this part of Eastern Europe.
Thanks a ton Guys, we were really fed up (pun intended) with your service :)

“Took a while to get the food but worth the wait”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2012

I went to the website to check out the menu before actually arriving. When we got the there mid afternoon the place was empty and our hostess quickly seated us. We knew from the website just what to get so we ordered Chicken Jalfrieze, Garlic Nan, Mushroom Masala, Basmati Rice and Dahl. The drinks came quickly but the food took much longer than I thought, maybe 20 minutes. It arrived and was placed on small burners.

The food was very tasty albiet some of it, particularly the Chicken Jalfriezei was not as piping hot as I would have thought. This may be typical though -I have heard this often of several local restaurants. The portions were very generous. Two of us barely finished the rice and chicken and we had to take home 1/3 of the dahl and Mushrooms and some Nan which made for lovely leftovers. It was spiced perfectly and I got the sense that if we came in the evening the place would have been hopping. Our bill came to less than $40 lev

“Tasty and cheap”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2012

This restaurant is in the student district of Sofia. A pleasant, modern environment which smells both clean and spicy at the same time. Staff are professional, if a little aloof, and English is spoken.
The menu offers a wide range of dishes with options for vegetarians. Prices are very reasonable at about BGN 6/dish.
Our starters were a bit disappointing; the chana-aloo-chaat was more salty than spicy and served without the traditional tamarind sauce. The popadoms were dry and a little overdone and the dips were inauthentic. However, the main course made up for it. We had dal makani, shrimp curry, a rice to share and a portion of okra. There was way too much food but the restaurant was happy to box up the leftovers.
