Well, where shall I start? Sarajevo is a city shrouded in sorrow, happiness, pain, and nationalism which makes even the French blush. Before the Balkan war of the 20th century, Yugoslavia was a prosperous and independent country which thrived under the leadership of Marshal Broz Tito, Sarajevo was one of the main cities and tourist attractions in the old Republic. It was prosperous to say the least, after the war Sarajevo had gone from Olympic host city to a smoldering village. However this city today has been rebuilt, not to the fullest extent but many parts of it have been revived, as you walk down the main street in Sarajevo you will see blends of old and new, scars cover the ground you walk on which give you a sense that something unforgettable had happened but as you look up you see the people smiling and going to their day to day work. Sarajevo accepts tourists very well due to the fact that Bosnians have a strong sense of nationalism and want to show off anything they have to others. No matter what you are looking for you can find it within a 10-20 minute walk radius throughout the city, it is not a small city but the way it is built it is relatively easy to get to your destination. Looking for food, well you can head towards Old Sarajevo, there you will feel as if you are walking through ancient Rome, the ground is not paved but stone blocks take over. The streets are built with rows of stores on either side which sell jewelry, clothes, accessories, tourist merchandise and restaurants. A very popular and old school dish in Sarajevo is the Chevap or Cevap. It is a finger food made out of ground beef and lean ground veal, it is usually eaten with a piece of bread shaped like a big D and onions. The drink to go along with this traditional dish can be anything from beer to sour milk, if you are a beer-lover or just a casual drinker then the beer of choice would be Sarajevska Piva. For children a nice refreshing Fanta or Coca-Cola would do the job. Old Sarajevo is the heart of Sarajevo, this section is where all the finest restaurants are located and some of the oldest and more authentic shops along with a very nice 5-star hotel. You will know if you are in Old Sarajevo by the change in the architecture and number of people or even by what the people wear, business men and women are usually located in the newer and rebuilt sections of Sarajevo along with the youths because of job locations and school locations, while the Old section has more of the older people that just want a place to relax. Summer is hot and winter is cold in Sarajevo no matter if you are in Old Sarajevo or the New, the country is a very mountainous region therefore there is plenty of skiing and snowboarding and the like. Sarajevo is a city which gives many people many experiences there is no definite way to describe the city but it is a city which should be visited by everyone at least once.
