Owner description: Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Bascarsija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isakovic founded the town. The word Bascarsija derives from the Turkish language. The word "bas" which is "bas" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "carsija" which is "carsi" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market". Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Bascarsija is half the size that it once was. Bascarsija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Bascarsija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Bascarsija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.

Sarajevo is jerusalem of europe and walking through the old streets of Bascarsija will definately give u the same mpression. Really great place worth of visiting. Specially for the photographers sarajevo is a dream. I suggest to go a little bit up to the hills around sarajevo from u have great view on the whole old city like vidikovac caffe or park princeva restaurant.

“A city of beauty of city of pain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

Sarajevo is a beautiful city. I never saw it before the war, but I've seen it now. Before going to Bosnia the most I knew about Sarajevo was through news reports interrupting my Saturday morning cartoons. Sarajevo is a beautiful city and this Ottoman section is facinating. It's like a little Istanbul but the vendors aren't quite so "energetic" in demanding your business. It has a more laid back southern European feel.

We walked around the city with a guide, Mustafa, who helped us appreciate this city and the horrors that happened in the recent past. You can see it in the shops as well, among the copper coffee pots and ceramics are bullets, helmets, and other mementos of the war. There are still portions of the city where you can see the blight of war, bullet holes, rocket marks, etc. But the center here seems as if it's been this way for centuries.

I suggest taking your time and walking this old part, stop and enjoy some cevapcici and enjoy the beauty. The mosques, the synagogue the churches. It truly is a multicultural and inviting city. There's also an interesting clock tower that instead of marking standard hours, counts down to sunset.

Sarajevo is a vital and interesting city and is worth the trip.
