This was my second stay at the Rogner, and will be my last.
The first experience had been marred by street protest on the nearby Boulevard, and as my room faced the street, I had been unable to rest properly. Given that those were not issues the hotel could address, I gave it a second chance.
Getting away from second-hand smoke and the smell of smoke is impossible at the Rogner - even non-smoking rooms seem to have been permeated by it. The beds are of comfortable size, but they feature horrendous pillows, perhaps five centimetres in initial thickness, that become virtually non-existent upon resting one's head on them. There also are no flat sheets, nor blankets. Rather, a sort of comforter/comforter cover combination, about as wide as a single mattress, is provided, a thoroughly unpleasant compromise that neither provides sufficient heat nor covers sufficiently while sleeping.
While zapping channels (there are 6 English-speaking channels, 19 German-speaking ones), I happened upon two "pay per view" where porn was running, free of charge, causing great embarassment to my female colleague and travel companion, with whom I was sharing a moment of relaxation.
Towels in the bathroom are rough, non-absorbent and insufficient for one shower, let alone two in the same day.
Breakfast is unmemorable and service unattentive.
The outdoor swimming pool is not heated.
