“Good food, impatient servant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

We had the Greek salad and various kinds of grilled meat. The food was very good, although the servant was a bit impatient. The menu is in Albanian, and when we asked if he could explain what was on the menu, the explanation was very brief and brisk. And we got the feeling we really needed to make a choice then, instead of getting some time to think it over. On the other hand: after 2 full days in Tirana, we got the impression that the people here are impatient in general, so this attitude might be endemic to the people here. Or maybe this man just not have a good day. Anyway, food and athmosphere were good, so we would recommend this place!

“Fabulous! Fabulous!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

It was a dark and stormy night (really, it was) when we hit Tirana, Albania. Braving the incredible downpour, we were determined to find a truly Albanian restaurant for our first meal. Disappointed in Taiwan Center (a lot of Italian restaurants) we headed for the main street. It was only by chance we looked down Reshit Collaky and saw the sign for Sugar Grill. The posted menu was exactly what we were hoping for. Three of us dashed into a pleasant, brightly painted, sparkling clean restaurant and were created by Sajmir Foraku, Chef and owner of Sugar. Thankfully, my son (a Peace Corps volunteer) was fluent in Albanian. He had a lovely chat with Sajmir and that set the tone. We were the only ones in the place - though I hope others will see this review and pack it. I ordered the pork, my son the chicken and my husband beef. Each dish was grilled to perfection but it was what came before that was amazing. After my son explained we wanted real Albanian food, Sajmir took it upon himself to bring us a few dishes. An incredibly fresh salad made of greens, carrots and cucumbers started us off only to be followed by an amazing, meat stuffed zucchini dish, a tomato sauced, grilled eggplant dish, cheese and bread. He chose a Montenegran wine that was beyond compared. We drank he first We drank a second - the Sky Hotel where we were staying was only a block away - and we feasted. The music was American - a little jazz, a little blues. Sajmir was charming as was his steward Edmir who came out from the kitchen to greet us. I have no idea how long we lingered but it didn't matter. We were as welcome as if we were relatives. We had a week of traveling ahead of us - all the way to my son's home base in Barjam Currie - but a week of traveling could not get Sugar Grill out of our heads. We ended up back in Tirane at the end of that week and - you guessed it - our last meal was at Sugar Grill. The second experience was as good, if not better, than the first. If you find yourself in Tirane, Albania get yourself on over to Sugar Grill. The price is extraordinarily reasonable, the food is beyond fabulous and the owner and his steward are exceptional hosts.
