the Hotel Lugano is basic but the rooms are comfortable, cosy and clean. We had a front room with a balcony with a great view across to the mosque (and an early morning call to prayer!). the bathroom was quite cramped for space (you almost had your feet in the shower tray when on the loo!) breakfast was included and consisted of bread, egg, cheese a croissant, juice and coffee which was all fine considering the price (we paid 50 euros per night for the room) its a great location- first impressions may be you have picked a rough area but Tirana seemed very safe and people can be trusted. there are some nice little bars and cafe's nearby (the Red Lion became our local for a beer and Piccadily for coffee), and its only a short walk from the Risa Express shuttle from the airport. Skanderberg square is only 5 minutes walk and the whole city is very navigable. If you want luxury this is not the hotel for you, but if you want somewhere for an authentic Albanian experience that is comfortable, central and good value then I would recommend this hotel.
Tirana tips- Cheers bar and Big Ben in 'the block', Era to eat, the socialist realist paintings in fine art museum, Sky Tower for a panoramic cocktail, the central market for fresh cooked seafood, but generally just stroll and take it in. its chaotic and a bonkers mess of a place where things don't work or they don't have them or they are closed, but the people are very welcoming and learn a few words (falimenderit!) and and you will get a great response. oh and the weather was lovely!
