My husband and I just returned from 7 nights at BBI. Overall it was a really nice, relaxing vacation. Here are the pros and cons we found:
-right on the beach in a quiet area
-live music every night from 5-10pm... a bunch of Fijian guys with lovely voices- definitely one of our highlights. My husband brought along his guitar and jammed with them several times, which he loved doing
-the restaurant served a wide variety of delicious food (tip: try the banana fritters and ice cream dessert... it's on the kids menu, so you wouldn't normally see it unless you're traveling with kids)
-room was quite large and comfortable. Same with the bathroom.
-snorkeling and ocean-kayak gear free to use. There are only 2 kayaks for the whole hotel though, so make sure you book it at the front desk. We didn't find this to be a problem.
-small and personal. The staff learned our names quickly, and we got to know them, as well as pretty much all the other hotel guests. Made it feel more family-like. I'm sure you could just stick to yourself too, if you wanted to.
-BBI spa was really nice, and had reasonable prices. We got a coupon for a free 10-min foot "ritual," which was great (too short, though ;) ). We didn't know how nice it was inside the spa until we went for that foot rub, but the views are beautiful, the spa girls are friendly, and it's clean.
-1.5 hour drive from the Nadi airport on rough roads that were probably paved ages ago. Not good for someone like me with a lot of motion sickness... I puked before arriving
-not a lot to do in the immediate area unless you hire a car or taxi... chilling by the pool and beach is wonderful, but gets old quickly. There are tours you can go on, but...
-we were expecting the tours to be Thailand-priced (for some reason... I guess b/c of our last holiday), but they ranged in price from about $150-$450 Fijian dollars, which we thought was a LOT based on what you're getting, so we opted not to do any.
-not a lot to do at the hotel... again, it WAS nice to just relax, but we were bored, especially in the evenings. They have beautiful live music and a bar, but we didn't just want to sit around and drink for hours every night. We would definitely recommend BBI to improve this by creating a games room with ping pong, shuffle board, air hockey, etc, as well as have movie nights (no TVs in the rooms, so this would be good).
-not a lot of restaurant options in the area... while the BBI restaurant (Ebb Tide Cafe) was delicious, we were after a bit more variety in the area, but there were only about 3 other places to choose from: Casablanca looked dodgy, Le Cafe was so-so (we had dinner there one night), and the Outrigger Resort restaurants looked really nice, but were quite expensive, so we gave them a miss
-on the food theme, there was nowhere really to buy snacks in the area. You know how it is when you're hungry, but not enough for a full meal? Well, we had plenty of those times. There's a corner store at the end of the street, but it was very poorly stocked, and had mainly chips and crackers which were from the Philippines (unfamiliar brands to us). You could also take a taxi or bus into town (Sigatoga- 10km away) and shop at the bigger grocery store there which had cheaper prices, but also not a ton of selection. Had we known, we'd have packed granola bars, trail mix, muffins, etc. Careful though, b/c you're not allowed to bring a lot of things through customs at the airport (I had 2 apples confiscated there upon arrival)... but be sure to declare stuff as they'll fine you otherwise.
-bed was quite hard. It was fine for me, but my husband got a really sore back from it, so the last couple nights he borrowed two deck chair mattresses from the pool area and put them under the sheet... he looked like Princess and the Pea, but it did the trick.
-cleaning staff was VERY loud outside our room early each morning. Just talking, laughing, etc... nothing offensive, but annoying when you want to sleep in past 8am.
-all the rooms are non-smoking, which is great, but the lady next to us enjoyed many a cigarette on her balcony, which stunk up our room as we liked to keep our sliding door open for fresh air. If this bothers you, request to NOT be put beside smokers
-cleanliness was pretty good, but our room's tile floor felt a bit oily after its daily mopping (even when it was dry). The bed sheets were replaced daily, but could have smelled a bit fresher.
Overall, we would recommend BBI, especially if you are coming with your family, or want to hold a family reunion, conference, or wedding (not sure if they do those), as the place has a small, personal feel to it, so you wouldn't feel over-run with other guests.
Special shout-out to Betta and Penna for their lovely service and hospitality. :)
Most top floor rooms have ocean views... bottom floor rooms don't.
