“Ten days of relaxation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2009

We booked this resort, to accommodate the needs of our mobile, but severely disabled child. We enjoyed the large grounds and beautiful gardens with well paved footpaths and a covered walkway. The swimming pool was ideal with several shallow areas with features providing interest for example the bubble spa and the fountains. There were more sufficient deck chairs and well shaded areas for protection from the sun.
We were located in an ocean view room in the main block. It meant easy accessibility to reception and a short walk (five minutes) to the pool and restaurants. The room was pleasantly and simply decorated in neutral colours. The balcony had comfortable deckchairs to sit on and watch the sun go down. The beds were extremely comfortable and the air-conditioning was quiet, effective, and at times not needed.
The room was efficiently cleaned each day and re-provisioned.
With babysitting, we used the kid-free zones of KaloKalo bar and the Ivi restaurant. We had high tea at bar which is located high on the hill and which was exactly as expected with cucumber sandwiches, little cakes and tea along with extensive views. We also had a cocktail there one evening and watched the sun go down. The Ivi restaurant provided Pacific Rim cuisine with Fijian style service.
We did not use the meal plan. Included in the room price was a ‘kids meals free’ offer and the kids menu provided a range of options for our child. We ate at the buffet on the Indian themed night and enjoyed the variety. However the a- la- carte menus in the Sundowner Café and the Baravi Café are somewhat limited. We were puzzled at the lack of Indian and Fijian food choices on the menus of these two eateries.
We had been looking forward to kayaking with our child but unfortunately the trade-winds were blowing making the lagoon too rough for kayaking and unpleasant for snorkeling.
The resort has a structured activity schedule. We enjoyed the fire-lighting ceremony each evening. The gym is well equipped and there is a tennis court and volleyball court. The instructors are friendly and attentive. The kids club wasn’t suitable for our child as she lacks the intellectual capability but we did use the playground and were impressed by the care and attention being given the children in the club along with the wide range of activities they were undertaking.
We received excellent support from the staff. They knew our child’s name within a day of our arrival (partly due to her disability). They went out of their way to engage with her.
The musicians, three men on ukulele and guitar were fabulous. Rosie loved to sit at the end of each meal just listening and clapping to the music and they were very encouraging and warm towards her. Rosie loves music and these interactions were a major highlight of our time here.

Great hotel, stayed in a beautiful Bure. Great Butler service, friendly and so helpful to somebody who can't eat so many foods. Made great friends with so many staff in a week. Going back next July for my birthday!

We enjoyed our holiday so much that we are going to go back in November for 9 days this time. We traveled with two young children aged 4 and 1, and we stayed for 7 days in a Superior Resort View Room (the cheap rooms). If you fly directly from Brisbane or Sydney you may get to the resort late in the evening but you can still go to the restaurant which is open until 10 at night. The main restaurant has themed evening buffets which change every day. After reading reviews before going over we purchased all our meals up front and this worked well. We used a local nanny on a number of occasions and the resort organised this for us, getting the same nanny each time. The cost was $10 fj for the first hour and $7 for each hour after that. While we were there they fixed up the pool but they did the work at night and completed it within two days (something that had to be done and they did it in a way that minimised inconvenience to guest). You have to be staying at the resort to use the facilities so unlike other resorts you are not crowded by guests from sister hotels. The kids got to know each other through the kids club and it was good to see them interact at meals.

There are a few tips that I would offer to make your holiday more enjoyable.
1. If you are booking with Qantas, be aware that you still fly with Air Pacific and it is cheaper to book with them directly.
2. The hotel will swap money for you but you can get a much better rate from Australia Post before going (the babysitters need to be paid as you go).
3. If you have young children you will need to get used to the layed back culture when it comes to being served your meals. We recommend that you have lunch by the pool so that you can order and the kids can just play until it comes (don't be upset if your desserts don't come until you have chased them up once or twice).
4. There is a free nanny service at breakfast which can make it easier for everyone because the kids tend to finish eating before the adults.
4. You can swim at the beach but only for a couple of hours during the day.
5. There is a shop just off the beach which sells things a lot cheaper than the resort if you are looking for water, snacks or the like.
6. We recommend that you get a private vehicle to and from the airport and the hotel can organise this for you at a rate which is much cheaper than the travel agents.

Overall this was fantastic family holiday and we fully recommend it to everyone. Don't be afraid to use Bebe Spa, the cost seems high but the service is great.

Happy holidays

Bula 1smallfamily,

Thank you for taking your time and recommending our property on trip advisor!

It is only through your valuable comments that we can continue to improve our product and service for you our valued guest. I will pass on your comments to our team and share your experience. I am delighted to note that your comments in which you praise the efficiency of our team work and excellent hospitality of our staff. Also, I was glad to know that the restaurants, nanny service and pool facilities exceeded your expectations! You had provided some great suggestions to other travelers from your resort experience in Fiji. I note your point on slow service at pool side restaurant and this will be addressed.

Thank you once again for taking the time to write and for allowing Outrigger team members to show their best with regards to your service and thanks for your appreciation. We look forward in welcoming you back to the Outrigger ‘Vuvale’ (family).

We chose Fiji for our honeymoon and split our holiday between Tokoriki (island) and Outrigger, predominantly based on recommendations from our travel agent and internet reviews. After having spent 6 glorious days on Tokoriki; a small exclusive feel resort (minus the price tag) we then stayed at the outrigger to discover the mainland. Whilst this is an excellent base to discover the mainland; sand dunes, Sigatoka town, villages and picked up some local souvenirs, our stay at the outrigger was very disappointing. The 2 best features of the resort were the IVI restaurant and the Bebe Spa. The beach is not at all swimmable and with only 1 pool filled with toddlers, this is not the ideal "honeymooners" resort. We thankfully stayed in a plantation bure which was well tucked away, nonetheless, we could still hear the kids from the daycare centre who seemed to be having a ball! The daily butler service was excellent but felt obliged to tip. The service here was nowehere near as friendly and warm as our stay on Tokiriki and would only recommend this place for families. The outrigger rate themselves as a 5 star resort but have a long way to go to meet other 5 star resorts; the place is screaming for refurbishment and overall felt like this was the destination for families on a "buffet" budget getaway.

Congratulations again on your recent wedding!
Vinaka for your positive comments on Ivi Restaurant and Bebe Spa.
Tokoriki is a beautiful, quiet, couples only bure island resort. However comparing the two is pointless as they are vastly different products, in fact they compliment each other offering two different Fiji holiday experiences.
Re your refurbishment comment, please be more specific as our resort has just completed a major refurbishment see previous reviews on room décor.
Also your family on a buffet budget comment didn’t make sense, as families in fact do pay good money like yourselves.
Your Travel Agent was right to recommend Outrigger but perhaps not to you.
Thank you for your feedback and we will work towards improving all guest experiences.

Loved the Outrigger - an excellent choice thanks to Tripadvisor! We stayed, as recommended, in the Ocean wing which was close to all the amenities and had a great view of the ocean. Meals were especially good in the buffet style restaurant. We also enjoyed "high tea" in the spa bar area - overlooking the coast - on one wet afternoon.Lovely! The snorkelling from the beach was ourstanding - lots of fish, coral and blue starfish. Go to the right hand side out near the red/white post for best area (or ask one of staff as I did!) Staff were all very friendly. Loved the talai butler which we "upgraded " to - including champagne & canapes each evening. (Saved us buying some alcohol every evening - which was not cheap) Spa was unbelievable - I got money off as part of our upgrade.
Also enjoyed the firewalkking show - DO go if you are there on a Tuesday eve.
Taxis from "next door" are cheaper, but as we had a VERY early leaving time, we ordered one from the hotel. Lots of tourts can be booked from the desk. We went to Tivua island ("Mystery island") which was the best thing we did in Fiji. An excellent host with bbq lunch, snorkelling, cruise to the island etc. (Onle downside was getting to Nadi which was quite a journey - but included in the tour)
Another place to go is little wildlife centre (forgotten name) just outside main gate - well worth a couple of hours wander around rainforest walk, see tutles fed and hold animals.
Would certainly recommend this hotel - lots of activities arranged - if you want them!

A perfect spot for a relaxing break. The staff were wonderful, very friendly - nothing was a problem - even when we had to move rooms due to a gas leak. Many thanks to all - particularly our butlers Lusia and Salote. The Resort is well appointed and maintained - the gardens are great, a few mozzies so recommend taking some areoguard. Highly recommend the Bures - the little extra touches are great. The food overall was good - the Ivi is excellent - try the Kokoda. The theme nights in the Vale Ni Kana are well organised and the food is good. One downside is that there is only one option for breakfast - it would be good to have another where one could have a light breakfast rather than paying $22AUD to have one's morning muesli or a bit of toast. While we found the number of children a bit overwhemling (just us) I would have to say that the resort caters for kids very well and we would still go back.

My partner and I had an amazing time at your resort, first time we visited was last year and at the time we decided to come back to get married the following year. Blessed with an amazing wedding planner Ilisoni Vibose, along with the incredible staff and service at the resort our special day was one we will never forget, all our needs were met with the wedding and our stay at the resort with a 5 star quality, I would recommend The Outrigger to all my friends and family.
