“Top rate hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2010

We stayed at Intercontinental with 1 year old and 3 year old. We booked two joining garden rooms which was a cheaper option than a Beachfront suite. We then joined Ambassador Club and got one of the rooms upgraded to a Lagoon Suite. Our rooms were fantastic and we actually had too much room as they closed off the entrance to the Bure and we had a whole corridor between the two rooms! (So not strictly adjoining but adjacent, great if you have young kids but a bit far if you have a young baby.)
Kids eat free (yay) and we bought a Priority Privilege card and so got 50% off all food, bargain!
The only thing that lets this hotel down is the service at the pool bar/ restaurant. Help yourself to a table, then the menus, then the high chair, then eventually just grab someone to take your order. Kids food comes very fast though, which is a bonus. Unfortunately, at 5pm when my kids eat, this pool bar was our only option for dining. They ended up eating pasta/pizza/hot chips every day.
The Navo restaurant is super and we booked a romantic dinner, beachside, which was beautiful. The wonderful F+B manger made sure we were taken care of with a complimentary glass of (very good) wine. Big tip though, take your own duty free, they charge about $30 AUD for corkage but it still works out cheaper than buying wine from the wine list (Cloudy Bay SB was $240 $Fiji!!))
Our children loved the kids club and we paid a little extra for a babysitter for our 1 year old, but she just did the other activities with her big sister (it is so cheap anyway.) It meant she could bring them both back to our room for quiet time.
No-one has lived until they have had a Fiji four hands massage in the Spa, the best I have ever had in any country. (I have made a note to have one in the 30 odd countries I have visited.)
The Golf course is empty, challenging and beautiful. Some of the cart drives to each hole would suit a go cart, they are so much fun!
Overall, only having one pool and one restaurant for the children, limits this hotel, we wont go back as it is too far to travel form Perth. Bali and Thailand have better options, including more suitable day trips for young kids.
This hotel is beautiful, but just not outstanding, we could have been in any good hotel in the world, which is a compliment I guess!

Thanks for your feedback- I'm glad yoy enjoyed the spa. We have now broadened the options available for children over school holiday periods, so thanks for the feedback.

Just read the previous review and find it a little over critical. Have only just returned from the Intercontinental and found the rooms fabulous, and the staff fantastic. Just there for a few days so not there for a long time, but tried the diving and did plenty of snorkelling.
The rooms are very very modern, and large, with a beautiful bath out on the balcony. Thought I'd leave some information which I found surprisingly hard to find out . Food at the three restaurants was not as expensive as we expected - a full meal from the Toba bar is about 30-40 fjd, with some cheap options, and other more expensive options. All meals we had there were delicious - I had the chef special every lunch which were some of the best meals I've had. We ate once in Navo, which turned out to be 150fjd for a three course meal, with drinks - all absolutely gorgeous. It's certainly much cheaper than any equivalent in Sydney! We had breakfast at the Sanasana every day, which was 35 fjd per person (continental buffet). Very nice scones and croissants etc.
Went diving which was again fantastic, lots of fish, amazing huge corals and magic coral! The dive centre is called 'Reef Safari' and for 2 dives for a qualified diver cost $250 fjd, 1 unqualified $160. Couldn't find this information easily. Their email is natadola@reefsafari.com.fj.
Overall, the hotel was fantastic, and very very relaxing. Beautiful sunsets, and swimming/snorkelling of the hotel is fine - no problems with currents etc, didn't see the stonefish however.

BULLA

We stayed at the InterContinental Fiji in February this year in a "standard" room overlooking the south end of the kids pool on the ground level. Our friends had a beach front suite, yet we spent all our daylight hours in a cabana overlooking the beach or in the water snorkeling.

If the weather turned sour, you'll want the suite! Nothing to do here when the weather turns bad. They need to add pool tables in the bar!. We did spend a lot of time in the Toba bar for lunches and some dinners.

The Navo restaurant is world class and would be right at home back here in Melbourne, the beef steak at Navo is in my top 3 of all times. The Navo reminds me of 111 Spring Street, aka "the Windsor".

On the other hand, the Sanasana restaurant is pigs muck. I'm sorry IC, but it's disgraceful. We tried it for lunch and dinner and regretted it. Don't waste a night to use your free voucher for the Sanasana. If your budget requires dining at the Sanasana, you cannot afford the InterContinental Fiji.
Breakfast at Sanasana is marginal, and is also over by 10am. Really ruins my holiday with a "required" wake up time. I'm on holidays god damn it. Do an all day breakfast.

Snorkeling is GREAT right off the beach, but be VERY careful, I spotted two stone fish amongst the sand and coral over the course of 10 days in waist/chest deep water. WEAR booties!!!!!!!! For the unaware, google "stgonefish" We also spotted a Lion fish on our last day right at the edge of the coral reef before it drops off and he wasn't happy to see me! Bring your own mask, the resorts are junk. No showers apart from pool side, so last day water activities after you have checked out are an issue. The ocean is NOT for the novice. On our first day our friends witnessed a poor Japanese man, who was stupidly and recklessly walking on the coral, step off the edge into deep water, only to prove he couldn't swim.

The in room tv system is great apart from everything is out of ratio, people are stretched (4 by 3 image on a widescreen tv). Its quite annoying after a few days. Hotel remote, so no way to fix it. Quite disappointing for such a new establishment. Satellite dish alignment is off too, as soon as the wind picks up, many unwatchable channels (and few to begin with too).

Don't go on the village tour to the village 300 meters south east of the resort. We're pretty sure the wife picked up her Hepatitis-A from the kava bowl. Refusal to drink from the bowl could start another coup. The doctor tells us the Hep-A shots are not always effective. hmm

Rooms are great, AC works really well, beds a medium firmness and quite comfy, and with the shutters/blinds closed, very private. Room service could do with some more training, just silly little things. Any 5 star resort located in the third world will struggle with room keeping staff, but proper training and processes should prevent cultural differences from detracting from a nice place.

We hired a car from the hire company who has a seat in the concierge office. Once out on the highway, I regretted the 1.3 liter corolla the ladies picked solely on price. another 12 bucks gets you a 2L that will prevent you from being overtaken by trucks. Fiji drivers aren't Thai crazy, but its not western best practices by a long shot.

I can't get a golf ball off the ground, so no idea what the course is like beyond its green with a moderate sprinkling of sand. Oh yea, it'd be freaking windy, this place is where we should put the worlds wind turbines.

Internet usage costs are quite high, but considering where you are in the world, understandable. I recall something like 20 AUD a day. Don't come here for business, come here to disconnect and get away knowing you can still check for defcon 1 emails every few days.

oh and I can only say Bula so many times in 10 days people.

If you do go, check for the "emergency phone" near the adult pool.

We would like to thank the Chef at Navo for organising a lovely dinner for us for our 10th anniversary. We are vegetarian and the Chef organised a beautiful 3 course meal for us which was simply stunning. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It was definitely 5 star and we can not wait to return.
The resort is beautiful and very realxing. Snorkeling off the beach was great also. We travelled with our boys 7 & 4 and they had a ball also. They couldn't wait to return to the kids club and they loved the attention they received from the staff.

We only stayed one night due to the short trip to Fiji but nonetheless, this was an a great place. I went with my brother and sis-in-law & I know they have already been back to the resort. The property was clean, had awesome pools and good food. Rooms were very nice and I espcially liked the cleopatra spa in the balcony.
Service was good overall but I felt it could have been better.
In short, I can't wait to go there again.

As day trippers to the Intercontinental we didn't get to experience the rooms but got to see everything else.
Firstly the ladies at the spa were lovely and very obliging when I requested a spa tour. There is a great menu of services and would have been happy to try them all.
The spa overall was really lovely and minimalistic but with a comfortable feel.
We hired snorkelling gear from the beach activity centre and the staff there couldn’t be more helpful. They were thorough in their explanation of where to go for best snorkelling and made sure our gear was just right for us.
We ordered a pizza and some drinks at poolside and service was prompt and polite. The food was tasty, no complaints at all there.
Probably the stand out difference to us, compared with the Port Denarau resorts was the staff had a slightly more professional edge (attitude, uniform) while still maintaining a friendly and approachable manner.
The only downfall which isn't reaaly that much of an issue is once you are there, you are there. Its about a 40min drive into Port Denarau where the other international hotels and resorts are but that won't concern us for our next trip as we will be happy to stay at the Intercontinental.

Heaven on earth. It was my first trip to Fiji , satyed at the InterCon with wife and 2 year old. The hotel itself was one of the best most luxurious i have ever stayed at ( i have stayed in good hotels ) . The most impressive part of our stay was the STAFF at the resort. Most wonderful , warm hearted people on earth.

In our seven night stay the only let down was having to go back home. We have travelled around Europe , Hawaii and Thailand and can honestly say Fiji was one of the best .

Inter - Continental Fiji is a great resort with all the facilities you require. Great food , great beach and most of all greatest and most humble staff on earth

Hope to be going back in October .....
