“Curry eaten street-side with locals”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2014

We were on a mission to find curry-Mecca in Nadi. Not a sanitised restaurant catering to the tourist hordes, no we wanted gritty, real food in surroundings that would scare most visitors. Local people recommended one place and that place was Tata's and so here we were. Turn left at the big temple, look for an open air restaurant on the right, park and get in there. Go hungry, very very hungry.

We were only at the table for 60 minutes but what a delight it was.

The curries are on a board at the back; $5 small, $10 large. We knew we wanted Chicken Curry but there was also one perplexingly named Uncivilised Chicken Curry, which turned out to be free-range. No that was not on today our waiter explained, try the duck. So Duck and 'Civilised' Chicken it was.

Our hunger was hurting now as the savoury smells wafted of the kitchen. And then they arrived, beautifully presented on a plate of mixed dishes including dhal, poppadams, naan bread and a potato sambal. The curry took centre stage, a drier style with rich oily sauce in the bottom of the bowl for dipping the soft naan in. Each piece of meat was cooked on the bone so our fingers soon became yellow. The burn started slowly until we all were snuffling with 'curry nose' a happy side effect of our frantic devouring. Robert went even further with matching 'curry beard and shirt'.

Officially Tata's is not licensed but beers were produced when we enquired. We became very quiet and intensely focused on what was in front of us.

All was good with the world as we sat in the open-air restaurant, on the first day of our holiday. A sugar train crawled past, and big Tata held court with a bunch of mates in the corner. More beers arrived, waistbands stretched past the normal limits of elastic and then we were done.

At FJ$57 (NZ$38) for four large curries and seven beers Tata's was truly a bargain. And that is without putting a price on the experience.

“Nadi Icon”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

If you're brave, Tata's is a dining option not to be missed. Its one of those "got to be done" dining experiences. Food is typical Fiji curries as opposed to the more authentic Indian curries but are tasty. The Dhal is excellent.

Service is a little hit and miss although certainly friendly enough. Its a fun place to go with friends for a quick meal and a few beers. The restaurant is extremely cheaply built but adds to the fun of the experience. It's certainly a dining experience you will talk about afterwards...

“Curry In A Hurry!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

Ive always heard how great this place is, but when i did go there i was dissapointed, evrything is pre-cooked you could tell, The split Pea soup was cold, salad looked un-eatable but the curry made up for it although it was obviously pre-cooked. If you want a fast good tasing curry then this is a place for you, it wont let yoyu down and it is really affordable. although the hygienic condition of the place and pre-cooked food let me down. Not my best curry place but certainly the best if your in a hurry!
