“Great Experience”

Hotel Plaza Fuerte

This hotel is in a great location. You can walk to many nearby museums, stores and restaurants. It is in the old city a block from the old city gate. I was expecting it to be noisy, especially on the weekend when the street is full of people, but it was fine. This is an old building with an old elevator where you have to shut the gate then the doors, no lights on the buttons. We upgraded our room to one for $115 in March of 2008. This was perfect especially on rainy days. It had a nice living-room with a TV downstairs and upstairs was the bedroom and bathroom. I read the reviews and was concerned about the hotel being clean, especially since someone said it was not. I had stayed here about 10 years ago and wanted to go back. I am glad I did. To me being clean is my number one priority for me when staying at a hotel. We found the hotel clean, charming and convenient.

“Will never return”

The hotel facade is lovely and the common areas are quite well done, however the rooms themselves are badly in need of refurbishment and cleaning.
While the hotel is in a central location for bars, restaurants etc, at night the noise from the street is very loud and there is little that can be done about it (even if the staff wanted to be helpful).
Staff were very unfriendly and unhelpful. Having stayed at this hotel for 2 nights we were glad to leave. We were due to return to this hotel at a later stage but after our experience we cancelled our booking. However our credit card was still charged and took many weeks dealing with unhelpful staff to get any result.

In short I would not recommend this hotel to anybody.

We saw this hotel on Samantha Brown's travel show on the travel channel, so we decided to give it a try. Also, my husband studied Spanish for a month in Montevideo before I returned with him to visit, and he thought this was a good location for exploring the city.

The hotel is architecturally beautiful, with rooms opening out into bright open areas. There is a winding staircase with wroughtiron details, and the elevator is fantastically old fashioned.

Our room was two stories, with the bed upstairs and the bathroom, television, etc. downstairs. The room is clean but it appears worn. There is a musty type smell, but overall, the room appears clean and worth the money.

“Lovely staff, great breakfast”

We stumbled into this hotel based on Samantha Brown's recommendation (she does a travel show). I must say that in her show it looked much better than in real life. In real life it looked like an old, majestic hotel that had gone decrepit then was renovated on the cheap. The room was claustrophobic and not something you want to spend time in. The bathroom looked and felt like amateur plumbing; there was a grainy feel underneath the plastic of the bathtub floor (?). Still, it was very clean and warm, and you could feel relatively safe, though the doors are from the nineteenth century and a swift kick should dislodge them from the wall. Anyway, the staff was really super, and quite handsome if I may say so, in a macho latin kind of way. They delivered superb service without the monkey customer service smile you are so used to seeing in the US. It was refreshing. The breakfast was a pleasure each morning, served in what looked like a former ballroom. The location makes it easy to stroll through town in the morning or to catch a taxi. After dark, I was warned by the hotel staff not to go past a certain street.

We arrived in Montevideo early afternoon and stumbled across this hotel just off the Plaza Independencia on the corner of Bartolome Mitre and Sarandi in the old town. The hotel is centrally located, clean and modern yet retains lots of character. We stayed in a comfortable standard duplex room with a balcony overlooking the street. The bathroom was a little tired but maybe the move expensive rooms have been updated. Breakfast is very good but laundry is on the expensive side - wait until you move on...! The staff are very helpful and we enjoyed our stay. Recommended.
