“Good Location With Character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2012

Close to Plaza Independence this is a good location in an area of Montevideo that has plenty of character. The lift dates back to 1913 and the rooms have 4-5 metre ceilings.

The modernized duplex rooms with a the bed and bathroom upstairs have appeal even though the shower is a little bit small for some. The beds are comfortable and the reception service helpful. You get all the extras you would from a mainstream hotel (shampoo, shower gel, tissues, hairdryer, and bathrobes – for midgets).

The room had a cute balcony overlooking the street and the dining room upstairs has good views. At night the area was quite and we weren’t disturbed by the traffic or bars and restaurants nearby.

They probably need to get the house maids to give a bit more attention to cleaning and room presentation. Also keeping things maintained. Our upstairs Cable TV didn’t work despite a request for them to fix it (but not a big deal as the downstairs one worked fine), and a number of the recessed lights didn’t work.

Room Tip: Perhaps a corner room might be good to try as they are on one-level and appear to be bigger

they advertise as a four star hotel, which it could be if the rooms would not be so outdated, bathrooms with broken walls and tiles. we have requested a better, refurbished room, and they kept giving us bigger rooms with the same broken, stained walls, stained carpets,...
the only good thing is central and nice location within walking distance to all things of interest

The hotel is in an older historical building that was an exceptional value for the price we paid. Its location was excellent in that it was near shopping and within walking distance of the Mercado Del Puerto which housed several good restaurants. Although it was clean enough and modernized, there were some attributes of our room that were downright poor planning and irritating. You first walk into the living room area that has a nice leather couch facing a wall that housed a flat screen TV, a closet for your clothes, and a cabinet that housed a small refrigerator. There were several TV stations available and few to none that offered English speaking programs. There is also a desk and chair which came in useful since the hotel has free Wi-Fi. Initially all seemed ok however; the cabinet doors were difficult to open because they were miss-aligned and scrapped the floor.

The bedroom and bathroom were both located upstairs and both were cramped. And like a previous reviewer said, climbing those stairs really got old and irritating quick! Don’t even think that you could bring your suitcase(s) upstairs because there’s absolutely nowhere to put them. Also, if you’re fat or heavyset, you may not be able to fit into the bathroom because again, the door to the bathroom scrapes against the floor and really can’t open all the way anyway because the toilet and bidet will stop it from opening fully even if the tiled floor doesn’t. The best way that could have been resolved would have been to have a sliding door into the bathroom wall and then that would have alleviated the scraping door. There is no tub in the bathroom, just a shower which has glass walls for two of its 4 sides. As an FYI, there is no privacy when taking a shower there.

Our room came with breakfast which is located on the 5th floor. However, if you’re located on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd floors you need to take the elevator to the 4th floor get off and then walk up the last flight of stairs. Breakfast choices included bacon and eggs, bread for toast, croissants, little pastries, fruit juices, cut up fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals and coffee and tea. While the breakfast was adequate and the view of the city was nice, the condition of the room itself as well as the outside lanai area was in such poor repair it left one to wonder how safe the structure of the walls and floors were up there or for that matter the entire building.

The front desk staffers were as helpful as they could be since most only spoke Spanish although there were a couple who thankfully for us spoke English fairly well. The elevator was the original glass and wood antique elevator however, you need to make sure upon entering and departing from the elevator that all doors are closed properly otherwise the elevator will be stuck and will not move. The hotel does have a computer or two on the first floor that can be used by guests as well as free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel if you bring your own laptop.

This hotel has two things going for it: location (close to the old town and heart of things) and service (very helpful even though most of them don't speak English).
The downsides are that the rooms are dirty, muggy, and just plain not nice! I wish they had kept the old character charm of this old building but the rooms now are modem looking but falling apart! The room layout is also uncomfortable and bizarre. And lastly, the price is way too much for what you get. I'd not pay more than $50 for the room we had whereas we were charged $150!

Fair hotel. However I suggest a renovation and finishing improvements.

The hotel is right next to a string of bars/restaurants - perfect if you want to stay out and eat or party. That might be an issue for people trying to sleep, but we were out late and from New York City, so it didn't bother us at all. It's also around the corner from 2 of the main plazas. It's about a 15 minute walk to Puerto de Mercado.

Our room was renovated. The hotel is in a very old building and looks not so good from the check in area, but once you go up the elevator you see you're in a beautiful historic building. Our room had a balcony as well. Price and location were great. The carpet had some stains on it, but whatever.

We saw two rooms - one with the bed lofted and another with a king bed, small desk, in a very large room. Both were nice.

We arrived on December 31st around noon. A street party had blocked all access to the hotel by car. Hotel staff was very helpful and accommodating in providing directions on how to find the parking garage and carrying our luggage to the hotel.

During the afternoon, the street party (at the hotel footsteps) went on with loud music and people spraying each other with cider. It was a little bit too much for us but party-people did not bother us when we walked through them (only got my feet wet). The party ended at 6PM as promised by hotel staff. Then it was quiet and we managed to rest.

4th floor room: we liked the decor, the 20-foot high original ceiling was divided into a lower living-area and an upper loft with the bed. It was comfortable. Good wi-fi. Good parking garage (2 blocks away). Nice breakfast on the panoramic top floor with a great view.

Hotel staff (cafeteria and reception) was courteous and service-oriented.

During this trip, we stayed at the Hotel Klee, Hotel Embajador, Hotel Ibis and Hotel Plaza Fuerte. Plaza Fuerte was the best experience of the four.
