“Location and Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

In Uruguay there is no tourist hotel tax! Substantial discount for using credit card at restaurants, better than cash. Old and dated. Location next to Av 18 de Julio, banks and restaurants. Tango-like dancing at dusk every night in closet park to hotel on 18 de Julio. 10 minutes walk to Independence square, Theater Solon, and Old Town. 60% front desk staff spoke English well. Spanish helpful. Limited tourism info. Hotel suited for mid-range tourists, not luxury. Get an interior room! Noise from outside and other room an issue, no fire resistant walls/doors, weak ventilation. Bed good support. Temperature control difficult. A/C so so. Shower so small, you cannot wash without touching walls or curtain. Maids do a good job. Must go to breakfast early for best selection and seating. Overall a decent accommodation, but requires flexibility ad adaptability. 24 hour pass on Hop on Hop off a great tour and fantastic photo opportunities. Can start from Independence square or central port market from hotel. First day go later, scenery best Stop 8 to end. Next day go early get off at Stop 8, shop, get lunch and enjoy Las Ramblas area. If you stay too late, taxi back few hundred pesos. Also recommend Puerto Carrisco, but will require car or taxis or a lot of bus transfers and time. Free tour Sundays Theatro Solon, but so cheap anyways.

Room Tip: Get an interior room for quite uninterrupted sleep.

Comfortable beds, great showers and good location however the rooms were incredibly noisy. The windows are not airtight so rooms facing the very busy main road below are so noisy, do not expect a good nights sleep! Basic breakfast which was okay.

This hotel is located just off the main street in the centre of town. The staff is friendly , helpful and speaks english well. The roos average size and clean . Breakfast a bit of a crowded affair as the breakfast room quite small but breakfast was good.

It's centrally located, the room was clean and it had a parking garage (1 block away), where we left the car while walking around during the day.

After the simple but nice breakfast, we went to Avenida 18 de Julio (just on the corner), and from there you can walk to the Mercado Viejo, a must see.

Would definitely stay there again!

This hotel is currently being renovated. My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks in 2013 visiting her family and just returned from another two week stay. The hotel was being renovated back in 2013 as well. Construction in this country moves at a snails pace. The banging starts at 7 am sharp, so if you forgot to set your alarm clock no worries. The renovations are done on the cheap as well. in my room this year, the plaster was bubbling on one wall and the paint was cracked on the ceiling bathroom. The room was very damp and the exhaust fans in the bathroom did not work. The bathroom door's doorknob was missing its cover and my wife cut her hand on it. Despite reporting it and being assured it would be fixed, it wasn't repaired in the two weeks we were there. They neglected to replace the windows in the renovation. They are horrible. Not much difference in noise level whether they are opened or closed. Being in a city where it's fairly noisy, these rooms are very loud.

The room is small but clean and kept that way by room service. I did have to keep requesting replenishment of the bottled water in the room refrigerator. Breakfast is served everyday from 7-1030. It's basic; bread, croissants, jelly, dulce de leche, butter, ham, cheese, cornflakes, fruit, drinkable yogurt, juice, coffee, tea, and milk. Other than toasting bread, no hot foods are available.

The elevators are probably original so watch your step, they rarely align with the floors. If you have small children be careful in the rooms. Every room has an access door to the plumbing and utilities, this door is like a cabinet it just swings open and has no latch. It sits about 6 inches off the floor and is about 2.5 feet high. A child could enter it and drop however many floors up you are.

The hotel does not offer an iron or ironing board. It only offers an ironing service, for an additional fee. I always thought an iron was a basic amenity in a hotel room. No clock in the rooms either.

This could be a great hotel. Number one improvement would be finish the construction already. It apparently has been going on for a number of years. Second, replace the windows with some soundproof ones. Three, improve your service: fix things promptly, restock the refrigerators daily (you are losing money), add a grille in your breakfast area- you have the room.. Finally include basic amenities in each room that most hotels in the modern world offer (i.e. Iron, board and clock).

One last word of caution for U.S. Travelers: some rooms have U.S. electrical receptacles, however these should only be used with USB charging devices. (Smart phones, tablets etc.). They are wired into a 220 volt system and will fry any regular electrical device that you use in the US.

To sum up, for the price (I didn't book through the hotel) it's not a horrible hotel. The rooms are clean, comfortable beds, the plumbing works and you get a free breakfast. Wifi actually works this year, its slow but it works. But the rooms are noisy, response for repairs is slow and the rooms lack a few basic amenities. A basic fitness room would be nice as well.

Room Tip: Get a room ending in 06-11. These rooms don't have windows facing the street. You won't have...

During our Stay in Montevideo the Hotel renovate a Wohle floor of the Hotel.

AWFUL and loud noises the whole Day which started in the early Morning and ended in late Night.

The staff is very rude and wouldnt help us when we complained about the excessive noises.

Also the size of the bathroom is a Bad joke! You cant turn Around in the shower cubicule! Maybe it is enough Space of you are a midget otherwise it is very tight!

No recommendation for this hotel!

It is located in downtown Montevideo very close of 18 de julho Avenue, the most important one
of the city where the tourist find restaurants, good currency exchange houses, coffee houses and good groceries.
The rooms are small, but very comfortable and cleanes every day as so the breakfast area.
The breakfast is included and it is very good.Everyday is served the famous and delicious
Media Luna, a type of bread very popular in Uruguay.
The attendants at the front desk, specially Pablo, are very helpful, giving all information those
the guests need.
Was there on Carnival and certainly will be back.
