“A relaxing experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2009

I spent two nights at the Sheraton on business. As a single female traveller on my first trip to South America, I was a little cautious, but everything was fine. I arrived at the hotel at 12.30pm, in advance of the 3pm check in time, and they advised me that my room would be ready within 30 minutes, which it was. I stayed in an executive room on the club floor which was very clean and had everything I needed. Breakfast in the club lounge was good, and the service provided by the hotel staff was very good. It is very convenient being adjacent to the shopping centre which has a good food court and supermarket if you want to get out of the hotel. A good choice in a pleasant and safe location which I would recommend to others for business or pleasure.

It is well located, ideal for business.
I would say a superior 3 star hotel. Room has a nice view , staff is friendly and efficient.
Nothing exciting, but as far as I could evaluate, is one of the best options in Montevideo, and is fair for the price they charge.

This was a great hotel. We stayed here only two nights. We were suprised with the great service. Though there was a language barrier, the staff were very friendly and nice and helpful. The hotel gives you complementary cheese/meat plates, which is always nice after a long flight. Nice little sauna/pool. Great location. Very satisfied.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2008

We spent about 3 weeks studying Spanish at a school called the London School in Montevideo in late November to early December 2008.

We chose the Sheraton because it was the nearest to our school. It was a good choice. The location is out of the city center but that was better for a long stay. In fact it was fun to be at the Caritas shopping mall - all very strangely located in the grounds of a former prison. There is an interesting story about that. The hotel is geared towards to business but has a very nice warm pool on the top floor with a gym that is very good, modern equipment and well kept. There are 2 plastic Jacuzzis that run very well with hot water, which I liked but I think they should be re-coated as they are both showing their age. The hotel rooms are very nice. Since we were staying for a longer time, we elected to stay in a suite and it was just lovely. We had access to the lounge club on the 23 floor and breakfast was included. This made our stay easy since we were on a schedule. Service was generally very good. We found the Sheraton restaurant on the lobby level to be a disappointment. No change of menu, slow service and not particularly good quality food. However the mall had a food court and while the quality was not high class, it was adequate and inexpensive and fast. There is a Don Pepperoni chain that we found to be good. Some very nice restaurants in the area are near by including the spectacular " Francis" that is definitely worth a good splurge. Nothing is very expensive even with the 20+ sales tax.

One concern I had about the Sheraton is a recurring allergic reaction I had especially at night. There was a reflux odor from all the plumbing outlets and a musty smell mixed with old smoke. II coughed every night and felt the allergic affect when I was in the hotel. I wonder if when they converted the ho0tel to non smoking if they did not remove the carpets or if it is a ventilation problem. I would recommend the hotel to look into this as well as to figure out a way to keep the water from dribbling all over the sink counter. Those drop in sinks have that problem.

In comparison to the Radisson, which is in the down town, i.e. old town section, I was glad to be at the Sheraton. We had dinner at the beautiful top floor of the Radisson and that was wonderful but the hotel seemed cold and we heard about the problem with the windows. There was a terrific wind storm wh9ile we were in Montevideo but the windows of the Sheraton were not noisy.

  • Liked — Service was fairly good and location was great for our needs. Good neighborhood. Exec lounge was good.
  • Disliked — Odd mildew smell from time to time. Small lobby. Only one restaurant that was not very good.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2008

I stayed at the Sheraton Montevideo the week of November 15, 2008. From check-in to check-out I had a very positive experience. This hotel is fairly modern and the staff are extremely helpful and professional. I stayed in room 2314 which is on one of the executive floors. The room was large and bright and the bathroom was very nice. Worst thing I can say about the room is that there is no in-room coffee maker, and that's just a minor inconvenience rather than a real complaint. The mall attached to the hotel is nice and includes both upscale stores as well as some decent dining options. Best of all, on the first floor of the mall there is both a full service grocery store as well as a dry cleaners. Let's you buy water and other essentials without paying the mini-bar rates. While the neighborhood around the hotel is fairly quiet, there are a number of very nice restaurants within walking distance. Ask the front desk for some suggestions. Travel time to the main business district is about 10 minutes by cab.

Other observations - the health club and pool on the top floor are nice. The executive floor lounge is fairly stark. As others have noted there is nothing complimentary in the lounge. They do offer breakfast and afternoon refreshments. My rate included breakfast so I don't know what the normal charge is.

I went to Montevideo, Uruguay when working on a commercial and our production service company placed us at the Sheraton, Montevideo. While there is a major (and pleasant) shopping mall directly behind the hotel, you are essentially in the middle of nowhere. Yes, you are two blocks from the beach, but it isn't a beach you really want to stroll. The entire area around the hotel offers absolutely no charm. The rooms are fine/adequate, but nothing extraordinary. The hotel is very much in need of sprucing up. With nothing to do, we found ourselves wanting to go to our hotel room at night and have a glass of wine. But there was only one problem. The hotel, in it's infinite wisdom, only places wine in the mini bars of the executive floor rooms. Why that is, the main hotel staff had no idea. Revenue is revenue, and one would think they'd want to actually sell some wine in the rooms. One very nice feature of the hotel is the upstairs pool and workout area, which overlooks the ocean. On my next trip to Uruguay, we will be in search of another hotel if we have to stay in Montevideo as this Sheraton is merely adequate. Clean, with a pleasant staff, but just adequate.

  • Liked — The Day I Checked Out and flew to Buenos Aires
  • Disliked — The Neighborhood. Short of the Mall Behind, It was soulless.
