“Excellent location, excellent service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2013

Stayed with my husband and son last week and all I can say is EXCELLENT. The view to the Rambla is the best. Having an awesome breakfast with my family with view to Rio de la Plata is a breathtaking and energizing experience. The warm service provided by NH's employees made me feel at home. It wouldn't stay anywhere else... the location is great since it is away from noisy downtown but not that far...so it is conveniently located. thanks NH Columbia! you made our stay wonderful

Room Tip: the rooms facing Rio de la Plata (the Rambla) are awesome!

The single best thing about this hotel is its location, with a wonderful view over the great river and just three blocks from popular Sarandi pedestrian street, the heart of the old city. But location is not enough. Although rooms have been refurbished in recent years there is still a long way to go. Elevators are prehistoric and noisy, buffet breakfast is rather poor and it is very difficult to understand why a hotel that charges 130-150 US$ per night cannot spend a few dollars to buy decent towels… those at the NH Columbia are just a shame. The worst part of staying at the NH Columbia Hotel was using the bathtub. When I took out the cap all the water flooded the bathroom floor and the room, even out of the room over the corridor. I was helped by a good samaritan, the girl who was in charge of the reception that evening because there was no one from the maintenance department to take care. Although management seems way below standards I must say that young people working at the hotel were always very friendly and helpful, doing the best they could to keep customers satisfied. On the bright side, the hotel has a Wi-Free policy, as every hotel should.

Room Tip: Definitely rooms with view to the Rambla are the best, otherwise there is no point staying here.

Stayed for 3 nights with my husband and my parents in two separate rooms, with views to the Rambla, which is very nice. The location of the hotel is great - close to the Ciudad Vieja (Old City) and 18 de Julio - but be careful walking around at night, as after dark Montevideo is not that safe anymore.
The rooms are very comfortable, but you can hear people from other rooms through the ventilation in the toilets - and this also means that you may smell cigarette smoke, as some floors have rooms where smoking is allowed, and the smell comes through the ventilation system.
Other than that, staff is helpful, but check-in and check-out took forever, and I'm not sure why.
Breakfast is good, and on the roof top there's a small gym and heated pool, with sunbath chairs, and the view is nice.

The location; right on the waterfront near the edge the old city. If on foot, this is good location during the day since you can easily walk to the old city and main square area, or of course walk the along the rambla. The bad is this area is quite dead at night, and the old city is not the greatest area to be in at that time. If you have a car, as I did, then it is conveniently located and parking is free with a 24hr security guard. You can easily drive to another neighborhood in the evenings.

The hotel and room; the hotel is your usual large impersonal chain hotel that tries to be fancier than it really is. This is not necessarily bad but nothing memorable either. The rooms are decent size, clean and quiet at night. The bathrooms could use some polishing and minor repairs. The room price is a little steep.

The breakfast; this is probably the best aspect of the hotel. One of the better breakfasts I’ve had during my stays in South America. Large variety buffet breakfast focusing on healthy foods with eggs, juices and lots of fruit. My gluten free wife was happy she could enjoy a breakfast that didn’t only have bread available.

Modern hotel but starting to look a bit dated and could do wth a refresh to call itself a 4 star hotel. Weather had turned colder and there was no functioning heating in the room. Restaurant pleasant and breakfast good.
