“One of the great attractions of Montevideo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We have been to Montevideo numerous times over the past three years, staying for as long as a month at a time. We love the city, but especially La Rambla. The Rambla beaches for Rio de la Plata are from rocky to beautiful sand, and extend along some 10 miles or more along the Rambla. There are several fine restaurants along the Rambla, and it is a great place for walks and biking. It is amazing at that midnight on a week day, you will see familes with children, all having fun, and the traditional mate in every hand, with their thermos of aqua caliente. :-)

“Not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

The Rambla in Pocitos is a not to be missed experience. I can only speak about the Pocitos neighborhood of the Rabla (it is 22 K long) since it is near where we were staying on Avenido Brasil. It is the sidwalk area that borders the sea wall on the edge of the water that includes a bike path, a walking path, benches and a knee high wall to sit on. It is the most fun and most popular on summer evenings with families, toddlers, young couples, teens and people of all ages. People come to bicycle, jog, walk, rollerblade, visit, walk their dogs, stroll their babies, and eat ice cream. On a hot summer night the breezes make it the coolest place to be, and in the area I am describing, it felt very safe..... we were there as late as midnight. I don't know about safety issues, once the crowds thin out.

It is also popular during the day, and the Pocitos beach below the wall is well worth a visit as well. There is a small beach front restuaurant in the sand (near Ave. Brasil) that rents umbrellas for $12 (with 2 chairs it totals about $20). The sand is white and soft and the beach is wide enough that you don't feel packed in like sardines as you do on some beaches in the area. In the late afternoon, the warm currents come in and the water changes from cool to very warm. There is a gentle surf and no drop off which makes it really safe for kids of all ages. Babies sit and play in the shallow water. From this vantage point you can see the freighters and cruise boats in the distance, leaving Montevideo. It is popular until the sun goes down, when people pick up their beach chairs and move up to the Rambla.
