“Horrible service! They have an attitude beyond understanding.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012 via mobile

Acceptable food but the bad service overshadows everything. Worst of all was the attitude of the staff , pretentious and arrogant.

“Perfect Name for great restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

finally we found a restaurant in Mdeo that strays away from the never ending steak houses one claiming to be better than the other. In Rara Avis we found very a very creative menu while still being extremely Uruguayan in its roots. Both my wife and I picked pasta dishes. Ravioli of duck confit and Gnocchi al succo di Goat. Ravioli is the traditional middle class Sunday lunch, and gnocchi is made by hand in most families once a month. The reduction sauces were terrific, the plates tasty. The waiter offered us an excellent bottle of wine. The salad was also very good, though I expected more - the greens could have been crispier. I would not call the restaurant decor classy, but sober and very theatrical. When the piano and the sax started playing it all fell into place. The service could have been a tad more formal to my liking, but I can't complain, we had the best evening in Montevideo.

“Good, but trying too much to be great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

I didn't want to repeat the word 'pretentious' but perhaps that's what sums it up the most. I had the executive lunch which was OK, not but certainly not great. The gazpacho was brought in a glass standing on a leg placed in an uneven kanoo shaped saucer. Bringing it to the table looked like a handicap race for waiters, eating it was a challenge as it tumbled in all directions.

It is a place where you bring your business partners from the country side if you want to impress them. Good food in a pleasant ambience... there are many other places in Montevideo.

“Good, but not superb”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

I had rack of lamb for lunch. It was very good, but very small portion, about half of what other restaurant would have served. Service was polite, but not attentive, I had to wait to get someone to bring me bread and pour the water. Even though they had 3 or 4 waiters and a maitre d' at many times not one was available.
