“Be careful-No windows and no English”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2011

I am not looking to bash anyone, but the interior rooms have no windows. I speak enough Spanish, but had a hard time getting my point across to the staff, who spoke zero English, "Una habitación con ventanas por favor"

Otherwise a clean, new-enough hotel, friendly staff unfortunately unable or unwilling to speak English.

We have stayed at Sur Hotel for one night. Hotel is quite reasonable, rooms are small, but very clean. It looks like it was remodeled very recently. It does not have its own parking area, you have an option to leave it in a parking station one block far from the hotel. There is no elevator and nobody to help you with your bags. Watch out if you are carrying heavy bags. It is a good location for business or leasure. No continental breakfast, just a $5 coffee/juice/toasts if you really need it. In essence, I good, cheap alternative for a short stay in Montevideo. BTW, it has rooms for up to 6 people. That makes it a little bit noisy.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the lower floor if you are planning to carry heavy bags. No elevator.

Hotel Sur is a very basic and average Hotel in Montevideo. I haven't stayed at other hotels in the city but IMO there is no way this place should be no 2 on TA.
The place is rather small, with very limited services and options (No Bfast..). As mentioned by others, the rooms are clean but very spartian as well as the bathrooms, however, the noise level is unacceptable. The walls have no insulation whatsoever and all night one can hear people going up and down the stairs or in the adjacent rooms.
In addition, while close to the city center, the immediate vicinity of the Sur Hotel is rather shabby.
It was my first trip to Uruguay and while I will definitely go back to Montevideo, I will look for a better option than the Sur.

SUR Hotel offers great prices at a no-frills environment. Rooms are comfortable and spotless clean; wi-fi works perfectly and so the hair dryer, which is rare at hotels. The rooms at the older part of the hotel have lovely balconies; the ones at the newest part don't, but are more spacious. The breakfast was not included, so we just used the opportunity to explore the city's cafés. Hotel staff was very discreet, but offered help when we needed. The lack of lift makes the place unsuitable for older people or persons with disabilities, though. But SUR is perfect for those who want to explore the city all day, just going back to the hotel to sleep.

I stopped in Uruguay on my trip from Santiago, Chile to Sao Paulo, Brazil and stayed one night. I was looking for a small hotel that was near the ocean and the old town area. From what I read, boutique hotels are a new trend in Montevideo.
The hotel is relatively new and the people that ran it were great. The lady that checked me in late at night did not speak English, but we were able to communicate fairly well. The room itself was modern and spacious, but it was an interior room and did not have any windows. It was quiet though.
Breakfast was minimal, but I was able to have juice, coffee and toast before I headed out to see the city. They kept my bags during the day and when I returned, they helped me get an affordable taxi to the airport. The gentleman that was at the desk during the day spoke some English and he was very helpful.
I would give the staff five stars and the hotel itself four stars. The neighborhood is old, but I felt completely safe walking around at night and during the day. It is very convenient and except for having no windows, the room was great.

I was unfortunate to have to spend two nights in Montevideo at the start of September and based on reviews in trip adviser decided to opt for the Sur Hotel and if this is the number two rated hotel in Montevideo I'd really hate to see the rest!
Firstly I would like to say that the place is very clean and the location isn't that bad (15 minutes walk to independence square) our room was in the new part of the hotel and looked like it could have been rented by the hour!! Again it was clean and new it wasn't until the evening when you realise that instead of spending money on jacuzzis in the room they should have spent the money on a bit of sound insulation the Walls are a joke, every foot step, whisper, sexual encounter from every other room and the corridor can be heard. We were probably also unlucky that a group of guys were staying there who trickled home from 3 am to 6am so no sleep was had between these times and no member of staff asked them to be quiet.

Possibly the old part of the hotel could be less noisy.

The staff are friendly but they have no English so don't expect any advice.

again the hotel is clean (unlike Montevideo which is filthy) and the beds aren't bad (I like hard beds) but the noise is terrible

This was a great little hotel for a stay in Montevideo. It was in a perfect location, close enough to all the sights, restaurants, and shopping. The place was immaculately clean, both in the room and in the common areas. The room itself was very comfortable. We had an interior room, but this was not a problem as there was a good air conditioner / heater that kept the room well ventilated. The interior room was also very quiet. There was good hot water, and the toiletries were re-stocked daily. The staff were excellent. They were friendly and helpful, but they did not speak much English (not that we were expecting them to!) Only surprise was the expensive breakfast, as this is usually included in hotels in South America. Overall, a great place to stay in a lovely city.
