My wife and I spent 2 nights here and really regretted it. We booked a room advertised as a double, but the reality was that the room we had was probably normally used as a dorm as there was a bunk bed in addition to the double bed. The room was a kip - grubby walls, worn, poor quality sheets and bed, and depressing decor. There was some sort of plug-in 'heater' in the room but when I plugged this in we realised there was almost no heat given from it.
The worst thing about the room was that it was right at the front of the hostel and sided onto the street. This meant that we were disturbed constantly during the night by people coming in to the hostel and leaving. There is NO sound insulation from outside so there was also very loud noise from cars speeding by (they tend to have noisy engines in Uruguay!) as well as raging arguments between dogs. The music being played at reception (for their benefit) was also audible. The room was only separated from a large dorm next to it by a flimsy plywood partition so there was also no noise insulation from the dorm - when its occupants returned after a few drinks at about 2am was when this became apparent. Note that there is a notice saying the hostel has to be quiet after 1am. This was good to see upon checkin. However, it was not adhered to whatsoever. There is a bar in the basement and added to all the noise I mention above was the sound of a pool table being repeatedly discharged and also the TV that was showing a DVD. I finally snapped and went out to reception and complained that the noise policy was obviously not being adhered to. The staff were apologetic and did take steps to reduce this, probably because I was so furious and stressed out.
Next morning we asked for a different room but none was available and no compensation was offered.
Hot showers are available at all times in the hostel which is positive. However, they are separated from a toilet by just the shower curtain and the sight of bins full of toilet paper (you can't put it down the toilet) was disgusting.
The 'breakfast' offered by the hostel is ridiculous - coffee, an orange and 2 slices of bread that is very poor quality.
The location of the hostel is OK. It is close to beaches but is a bit of a walk from downtown and the more upmarket restaurant areas.
In summary I would advise that you check what room you will be in if you are reserving a room at this hostel, as sleep will not be something you ar egtting if you are in the same room as we are.
