“Absolutely Heaven!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

This is a long past due review of the Heavenly Tambo del Inka Hotel in Urubamba. My mom and I used this hotel as our base for 5 days during our visit to Machu Piccu and the Sacred Valley surrounding in August 2011. The hotel was about 1 years old, so everything was brand new, beautifully decorated and secluded from the outside world past the hotel gate. I love the 3 stone frogs sitting on the lobby bench and the huge double sided fireplace. You can help yourself to coca tea all day long to help with acclimizing. We did not have any altitude sickness at all.

We were in a room on the ground floor over looking the river and with a door that opens out to the patio with lounge chairs. Our room was spacious with walk in closet, gigantic bathroom with sepate shower on the right, huge tub on the left and a double sink in the center. We did not have problem getting enough bottled water, just get them from the pool area. We had breakfast at the hotel every morning, huge spread with hot and cold options, the choices were plentiful and always different variety of fresh juices are available, like watermelon, strawberry, papaya, and mango juices. I would fill up my thermos with the juices before I head out for my daily excursions. We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant on a few nights and they were all superb. I had duck, lamb and the infamous Peruvian loma saltado.

My mom had arranged for a personal driver for our daily excusions to Pisac, Ollantay, and Machu Picchu. We booked the horse riding tour of Moray and Salineras through Cusco For You. If you needed a taxi, the hotel is centrally located, just walk out of the hotel past the security gate and cross the street, you will be able to get a taxi or the tuk tuk for short trips. We also arranged through the hotel, Tickeri travel service for the Machu Pichu entrance tickets instead of waiting in line to get them at the cultural center at Cusco, just one less headache.

The hotel has a very famous spa on the lower floor and a pool that is half indoor and half outdoor. The only disappointment is that the hot tub is in the spa and children are not allowed in the spa, even though I have been to many spas already, I even had an over the pool kid messages at the Blue Lagoon in Iceland and the thermal spa in Bath, England. But overall, every hotel staff was very attentive, from the restaurant, concierge, pool attendent and the maid. The amazing thing is that all the staff greated us by name. If you are planning to stay in the Sacred Valley region, just book with this hotel, you will not regret it. It is so so worth it !

Room Tip: Ground floor facing the river

We arrived at Tambo sel Inka after a long day of traveling ... The scenery is spectacular and the view from the room breathtaking.

The staff was very welcoming and the check in experience was relaxed and well-managed. We had lost a bag on our glights earlier that morning and we arrived to find said bag in our walk-in closet!

The restaurant, while a lttle staid, had great service and delicious food. Breakfast was equally lovely.

The room itself was luxurious and well-appointed. The bath sat below a big window that looked out over the mountains.

The hotel even held our baggage as we ventured to Machu Picchu for several days. We took a train firectly from the hotel grounds to Aguas Calientes - very convenient.

We felt well taken care of and totally spoiled!

Upon arrival I knew I made a mistake by not booking this property the whole 3 nights we were in the area. Elegant property, firm bed, amazing spa. The room was a nice size and faced the river. If only I had known, I would have stayed longer.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this hotel. The grounds and rooms are absolutely beautiful. The hotel is tucked away in a very safe and secure location with stunning paths and beautiful views. The hotel has a full service spa that I was unable to use but I heard other guests rave about the services. In addition, there is an indoor/outdoor heated swimming pool. We were at the hotel during the spring season in Peru but the pool was plenty warm. The hotel does filter their own water, however be warned that this does not guarantee you can drink the water. In fact, I recommend against it as someone I traveled with did drink the water at the hotel and was quite ill. No fault to the hotel though, as they do provide plenty of bottled water in your rooms for brushing your teeth etc. The hotel rooms themselves are incredibly spacious. Definitely recommend! You will not be disappointed.

there are a number of well-regarded properties within the Urubamba region and we were deciding between the Tambo del Inka and a few others nearby, and we definitely made the right choice. The Tambo del Inka surpassed every expectation across the board.

The property itself is stunning. It's a modern interpretation of Peruvian architecture that blends perfectly into the beautiful surrounding mountains and the Urubamba River that runs through the back the property. All of the public areas within the entry are over-sized with huge dramatic windows, fixtures, drapes, walls and furniture. The colors are warm and welcoming. And the Junior Suite we had was spacious, extremely comfortable, with all the amenities you'd expect in any international 5 star property. Super comfortable beds, air conditioning if you require, and the sound of the river running by the hotel if you choose to sleep with the windows open. My only minor gripe would be that both the main room in the Junior Suite and the bedroom could use a bit more light. Truly minor. The Junior Suites overlooking the back of the property and river were well worth the added cost.

Even with the fantastic property and setting, where the hotel truly shines is it's service. We consider ourselves well-traveled and the service was nothing short of OUTSTANDING. And it wasn't just at the front desk, it was the concierge, the bellmen, the bartenders in the bar, the spa staff, the wait staff.....From the moment you arrive for a check-in the the beautiful lobby, offered Coca tea to help with the altitude, to the subtleties of being handed a napkin at lunch using a serving fork and spoon instead of by hand, this staff outshines even the best urban international 5 star hotel. Flawlessly trained and never overbearing. I truly couldn't find one awkward, unfriendly, uncomfortable flaw. And I tried :-)

We also stayed a other 5 star properties throughout the trip, and the Tambo del Inka out-shined them all. Absolutely world class and the perfect start to a fantastic Peruvian adventure. Kudos to all of the employees at the Tambo del Inka -- you have set the new standard,

We stayed here for two nights before embarking on the Machu Picchu trek. It is a gorgeous hotel in the Sacred Valley. Roger, our personal concierge, was simply amazing. He made every effort to ensure that all of our needs were met. The indoor/outdoor pool is great, the spa is world class and the food delicious. The suites are magnificent - no detail overlooked: huge bathroom, lovely dressing room and wonderful sitting areas.

Don't forget to explore the beautiful, safe and friendly town. The local market is a few blocks away, as is Seminario Ceramics.

This is a beautiful hotel in a lovely, peaceful setting. If you're heading to Machu Picchu from the hotel's private train station, spend at least two nights here to adjust to the altitude. The design is wonderful and open and enjoying drinks on the balcony overlooking the Urubamba is difficult to top. The hotel will book a driver to take you to the Pisac market, which is about 30 minutes away and well worth the trip.
